Deciphering lake and maar geometries from seismic refraction and reflection surveys in Laguna Potrok Aike (southern Patagonia, Argentina)

Abstract: Keywords:explosive volcanism maars sedimentary basin processes South America PASADO project Laguna Potrok Aike is a bowl-shaped maar lake in southern Patagonia, Argentina, with a present mean diameter of~3.5 km and a maximum water depth of~100 m. Seismic surveys were carried out between 2003 and 2005 in order to get a deeper knowledge on the lake sediments and the deeper basin geometries. A raytracing model of the Laguna Potrok Aike basin was calculated based on refraction data while sparker data were addition… Show more

“…The maar presents a very steep geometry with a water column of a maximal depth of 100 m (Gebhardt et al 2011). Climatic parameters exert substantial control on the lake level ) and can lead to important changes in organic sources and geochemical conditions recorded in the sediment (Recasens et al 2012;Hahn et al 2013).…”

“…The investigations presented here were carried out in two hydraulic piston cores 5022-1A and 5022-1D of 65 mm diameter, and 87 and 97 m long, respectively (Ohlendorf et al 2011), retrieved from the centre of the maar at 100 m water depth in autumn 2008. The cores were sampled at a resolution of one meter, avoiding felsic tephra layers and organic macroremains.…”

“…This type of relief is found in fjords, fjord-type lakes and in tectonically or volcanically formed lakes (Sturm and Matter, 1978;BĂže et al, 2004;Schnellmann et al, 2005;Gebhardt et al, 2011) as well as in impact crater lakes (Nolan and Brigham-Grette, 2007;Shanahan et al, 2006). Adequate sediment input is one of the most important prerequisites for the initiation of slope failure, and can also control the frequency of such events.…”
