“…Some halogenated organic compounds, such as PCBs and PBDEs, show dehalogenation and halogen rearrangement in plants (Liu et al, 2009; Wang et al, 2011a,b). The dechlorination of SCCPs had been reported under the role of nanoscale zero-valent iron (Zhang et al, 2012), indicating that SCCPs can be dechlorinated in suitable conditions. Thus, dechlorination and chlorine rearrangement products of 1,2,5,5,6,9,10-HepCD in the whole pumpkin seedlings were investigated.…”

“…To date, SCCPs have been reduced by treatment with metal sodium dispersion dechlorination [6], zero-valent iron [7], and photocatalytic degradation [8][9][10]. However, the current use of physicochemical treatment methods to remove SCCPs is expensive, and the operating conditions are also severe.…”

“…Because of that, in order to obtain a cheaper method and more easily integrated with other technologies, the use of zero valent iron (ZVI) in combination with electrolysis has emerged as a promising alternative. Successful results in the dechlorination were reported for short chain chlorinated paraffins [24], lindane [25] or trichloroethene [26], with studies included the evaluation of the intermediates generated and the possible degradation pathways. Regarding electrochemical processes, in previous works of our group about the combination of this technology with EAOPs, it was demonstrated that, from the viewpoint of electrochemical treatment, a pre-treatment with ZVI does not show important advantages regardless of the electrode material used and the size of the ZVI particles [27].…”
