Decentralized Renewable Hybrid Mini-Grids for Rural Communities: Culmination of the IREP Framework and Scale up to Urban Communities

Abstract: The Integrated Rural Energy Planning (IREP) framework offers a unified road map for locating, planning and operating decentralized renewable hybrid off-grid energy systems for localized (rural) applications in low-income countries. This paper presents the culmination of the IREP framework and aims to illustrate the final step of the IREP framework for two communities in Nigeria. It is focused on two aspects. Firstly, the techno-economic modeling (investment and operation optimization) of a hybrid mini-grid sys… Show more

“…For the battery model, the lead acid battery (12V, 83.4 Ah) with a modified kinetic model was adopted. (Ugwoke et al, 2020). The cost of one battery is ₦75,000 and its replacement cost is ₦75,000, the lifetime span is 10 years and the maintenance cost is $10/year.…”

“…Single-sourced renewable energy systems are not reliable due to their intermittent nature, and therefore, there is a need for either energy storage systems which are expensive or hybrid technology. These systems provide useful social services in off-grid locations but with limited productive uses [14,15]. For enhanced socioeconomic development in rural areas, small-scale industrial and street lighting loads need to be included in addition to residential, smallscale industry, commercial, and institutional loads [15].…”

“…A review of existing literature shows that the topic, "Techno-economic optimization of Mini-grid systems in Nigeria: a case study of a PV-battery-diesel hybrid system", introduces fresh ideas in the energy field for Nigeria. Scholars have studied sustainable energy technologies and assessments in Nigeria [8,20,21]. These scholarly researches, among others, provide a foundation for further exploration of the aforementioned topic.…”
