Towards a Unified Open Education Ecosystem through Generative AI, Blockchain, DAO, MMLA and NFT

The aim of this research was to explore how DAOs, blockchain, NFTs, generative AI, and multimodal learning analytics technologies can be integrated to create a unified open education ecosystem representing a global, seamless, personalized, and democratic education system. The integration of these technologies can help to overcome the challenges faced by today's education systems and enhance accessibility, affordability, and quality of education worldwide. Educational technologies have never been closer to overcoming the issues of democracy and accessible education, which are among the biggest handicaps of contemporary education systems. Moreover, the successful integration of these technologies can create unique opportunities for personalized learning. Initiatives exemplifying this timely paradigm shift, such as The Open Campus project, have already begun to emerge. In this study, the potential uses of these technologies for a unified education ecosystem were examined with a scoping review of 30 most related studies. Afterwards, contributions, possible task distributions, and integration of these technologies were explained using concrete examples and real-world scenarios. At the end of the study, 12 key benefits of this unified open education system were explained: accessibility, personalization, educational quality, security and transparency, democratic governance, intellectual property and content value, open collaboration and integration, equality and equal opportunity, reusability of educational resources, preservation and promotion of cultural and linguistic diversity, innovation and experiential learning in education, and support for student success and career planning.

The cryptocurrency Ethereum is the most widely used execution platform for smart contracts. Smart contracts are distributed applications, which govern financial assets and, hence, can implement advanced financial instruments, such as decentralized exchanges or autonomous organizations (DAOs). Their financial nature makes smart contracts an attractive attack target, as demonstrated by numerous exploits on popular contracts resulting in financial damage of millions of dollars. This omnipresent attack hazard motivates the need for sound static analysis tools, which assist smart contract developers in eliminating contract vulnerabilities a priori to deployment.Vulnerability assessment that is sound and insightful for EVM contracts is a formidable challenge because contracts execute low-level bytecode in a largely unknown and potentially hostile execution environment. So far, there exists no provably sound automated analyzer that allows for the verification of security properties based on program dependencies, even though prevalent attack classes fall into this category. In this work, we present HORSTIFY, the first automated analyzer for dependency properties of Ethereum smart contracts based on sound static analysis. HORSTIFY grounds its soundness proof on a formal proof framework for static program slicing that we instantiate to the semantics of EVM bytecode. We demonstrate that HORSTIFY is flexible enough to soundly verify the absence of famous attack classes such as timestamp dependency and, at the same time, performant enough to analyze real-world smart contracts.

Hallucinating Machines: Exploring the ethical implications of generative language models

In the past five years, language models have dramatically improved in generating human passable content, high-level reasoning, and factual recollection. In particular, recent developments made by OpenAI with ChatGPT have seen a dramatic increase in the accessibility of interacting with language models.However, the tendency for language models to make up facts or hallucinate proves a severe limitation in terms of both safety and efficacy. This research explores how we can effectively utilise AI assistance based on generative language models and focuses on the ethical implications of these systems.A series of four experiments were conducted under the Critical Making methodology to emphasise the exploration of the ethical implications of generative language models. The results of these experiments indicate the prevalence of hallucinations in current state-of-the-art language models and how vector databases can be utilised to prevent these hallucinations, reduce biases, and better align language models to our intended values.This thesis suggests that AI should be used not to replace humans but as a tool to empower humans, acknowledging the potential challenges involved while proposing strategies and recommendations for the ethical use of AI technologies.
