The mechanism of incoherent π 0 and η photoproduction from complex nuclei is investigated from 4 to 12 GeV with an extended version of the multicollisional Monte Carlo (MCMC) intranuclear cascade model. The calculations take into account the elementary photoproduction amplitudes via a Regge model and the nuclear effects of photon shadowing, Pauli blocking, and meson-nucleus final-state interactions. The results for π 0 photoproduction reproduced for the first time the magnitude and energy dependence of the measured rations σ γ A /σ γ N for several nuclei (Be, C, Al, Cu, Ag, and Pb) from a Cornell experiment. The results for η photoproduction fitted the inelastic background in Cornell's yields remarkably well, which is clearly not isotropic as previously considered in Cornell's analysis. With this constraint for the background, the η → γ γ decay width was extracted using the Primakoff method, combining Be and Cu data [ η→γ γ = 0.476 (62)

We report results on the π-γ transition form factor obtained within the hard scattering approach including transverse momentum effects and Sudakov corrections. The results clearly favor distribution amplitudes close to the asymptotic form, ∼ x 1 x 2 , and disfavor distribution amplitudes which are strongly concentrated in the end-point regions. This observation is backed by information on the elastic form factor of the pion and on its valence quark distribution function. Applications of our approach to the η-γ and η ′ -γ transition form factors are discussed as well. Combining the form factor data with the twophoton decay widths, we determine the η and the η ′ decay constants and the η-η ′ mixing angle.

A detection scheme for characterizing high-energy γ-ray pulses down to the zeptosecond timescale is proposed. In contrast to existing attosecond metrology techniques, our method is not limited by atomic shell physics and therefore capable of breaking the MeV photon energy and attosecond time-scale barriers. It is inspired by attosecond streak imaging, but builds upon the high-energy process of electron-positron pair production in vacuum through the collision of a test pulse with an intense laser pulse. We discuss necessary conditions to render the scheme feasible in the upcoming Extreme Light Infrastructure laser facility.
