In the 21st century, it is becoming increasingly clear that human activities and the activities of enterprises affect the environment. Therefore, it is important to learn about the methods in which companies minimize the negative effects of their activities. The article presents the steps taken and innovative actions carried out by enterprises in the energy sector. The article analyzes innovative activities undertaken and implemented by enterprises from the energy sector. The relationships between innovative strategies, including, inter alia, digitization, and Industry 4.0 solutions, in the development of companies and the achieved results concerning sustainable development and environmental impact. Digitization has far exceeded traditional productivity improvement ranges of 3–5% per year, with a clear cost improvement potential of well above 25%. Enterprises on a large scale make attempts to increase energy efficiency by implementing the state-of-the-art innovative technical and technological solutions, which increase reliability and durability (material and mechanical engineering). Digitization of energy companies allows them to reduce operating costs and increases efficiency. With digital advances, the useful life of an energy plant can be increased up to 30%. Advanced technologies, blockchain, and the use of intelligent networks enables the activation of prosumers in the electricity market. Reducing energy consumption in industry and at the same time increasing energy efficiency for which the European Union is fighting in the clean air package for all Europeans have a positive impact on environmental protection, sustainable development, and the implementation of the decarbonization program.

Can Decarbonisation and Capacity Market Go Together? The Case Study of Poland

In recent years, numerous countries have introduced or considered capacity markets as remuneration mechanisms for long-term capacity adequacy. Since adequacy is frequently linked with thermal power generation, there is an ongoing debate as to whether this instrument could impact decarbonisation. In this context, the paper presents a quantitative assessment of the consequences of introducing a capacity market on decarbonisation pathways. The Polish power system is taken as an example due to its heavy dependence on fossil fuels. To this end, a computable model of the Polish power system is developed and applied to the study of two research scenarios. The first scenario presents the power system without introducing a capacity market, while the latter considers the system with a capacity market in place. The analysis shows that the introduction of a capacity market delays the decarbonisation of the power system and has a negative impact on carbon neutrality. Even though coal-fired units are phased out, they are mainly replaced by natural gas. The method and model developed within this study can be applied to countries where a capacity market is being discussed, and fossil fuels continue to play a dominant role.

Modeling Transformation Pathways of European Final Energy Consumption in the Transport and Buildings Sector Using Country Clustering

To mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in the European transport and buildings sector, it is imperative to transform their final energy consumption (FEC). This process of transformation varies across countries, for example, demonstrated by the discrepancy in new registration shares of electric passenger cars between Norway (64%) and Poland (<1%) in 2021. To account for these disparities in the modeling of the transformation, a scenario with Clusterwise Pathways alongside a Common Pathway scenario is developed. The country clusters are formed for each sector using an agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithm. The models TraM (transport), PriHM (private households), and TerM (tertiary sector) are employed to simulate the FEC for the European Union (EU), Switzerland, Norway, and the UK from 2019 to 2050 per energy carrier, application, country, and year. Regional constraints, such as depleted district heating potentials in Scandinavia, impose limitations on creating the Common Pathway. Also, the success of transformation is influenced by structural differences like the ratio of new registrations to existing vehicles in each country. The findings underscore the necessity of employing cluster‐specific pathways to adequately account for regional characteristics and constraints when modeling the transformation of FEC in the European transport and buildings sectors.
