Decarbonization and sustainable development goal 13: a reflection of the maritime sector

Abstract: Fossil fuel as the beacon of industrialization emits carbon dioxide more than any other source of energy. Carbon dioxide emission among other Green House Gases is the dominant gas responsible for global warming and damaging impact of climate change. Given the enormity of the impact of climate change, the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of which 'goal 13ʹ was a call for climate action to mitigate the drastic effect of climate change by reducing global warm… Show more

“…In essence, green manufacturing drives decarbonization, greens the scrap pile, and protects and empowers workers. Ezinna et al (2021) used the maritime sector to reflect energy decarbonization as a sustainable goal number 13, intended to reduce global warming to 2o C by 2030. They determined that achieving the desired 2030 green shipping was not feasible given that the worldwide community does not read the same urgency regarding the decarbonization of the shipping sector.…”

“… The need for continued research and development of innovative solutions to address the challenges of plastic waste management in India. Elsaid, and Aghezzaf, (2015) aims to develop a framework for sustainable waste management that considers the challenges and opportunities in the field. The framework will be used to guide decision-making and improve the effectiveness of waste management practices.…”

“…For example, cement manufacturing contributes to global warming and climate change by emitting carbon dioxide and consuming large amounts of energy [27]. Moreover, the maritime sector, which accounts for over 80% of global trade, emits approximately 2.7% of global carbon dioxide, thereby contributing to climate change [28]. The shipping sector also contributes to atmospheric and gaseous pollutants, impacting both health and the climate, especially in populated coastal areas [29].…”
