Decadal Variation of Atmosphere-Ocean Interaction in the Tropical Atlantic and its Relationship to the Northeast Brazil Rainfall

Abstract: The moisture budget over the Atlantic Ocean and South America is evaluated for two contrasting 5-year periods, 1985-1989 (wet) and 1990-1994 (dry), of rainfall over Northeast Brazil (NEB) using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. The linear correlation coefficients between the 5-year averages of rainfall over NEB and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies over the Atlantic Ocean show a dipole configuration over the Tropical Atlantic. It is found that evaporation is higher over the Tropical North Atlantic, and lower o… Show more

“…Normalized annual rainfall departures for sub-Sahara were obtained from Nicholson (1994). The procedure to obtain the annual rainfall departures for sub-Sahara is the same as the one used by Rao et al (1995Rao et al ( , 1999. In this study, we used 11-yr running averages to remove interannual and decadal fluctuations.…”

“…Where Q v is the meridional moisture flux, Q u is the zonal moisture flux, g is gravity, q is the specific humidity, u and v are the zonal and meridional components of the wind, and pt and po represent the pressure at 700 hPa and the surface, respectively (Rao et al, 1999). Marengo et al, 2004 show that the impact of the SALLJ on moisture transport on the east side of the Andes is more strongly felt below the 700 hPa level, where most of the moisture is concentrated.…”

“…Over the southwest Atlantic, interannual intensifications of the SACZ have also been linked to SST anomalies (Nogués-Paegle et al 2002). Furthermore, the decadal rainfall variation presents a pattern of meridional shift of the ITCZ on both the eastern Pacific and western Atlantic Ocean, which is closely related to the decadal change of the cross-equatorial SST gradient (Nobre and Shukla 1996;Rao et al 1999).…”
