Decadal variability of tidal dynamics in the Pearl River Delta: Spatial patterns, causes, and implications for estuarine water management

Abstract: In this study, we examine the decadal variability of tidal dynamics in terms of the tidal range in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) from the 1950s to 2016. The Mann–Kendall trend test and Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) method are employed to identify the long‐term trends and spatial patterns of the annual tidal range series observed at 26 stations over the whole PRD, respectively. The results show that most stations display an increasing tidal range trend, except for some stations near estuarine outlets, which… Show more

“…Lingdingyang Bay is a funnel-shaped subaqueous delta and has a 235 complicated geomorphology pattern with two deep channels (i.e., East and West Channels) between three shoals (i.e., East, Middle and West Shoals) (see Figure 4c). The tide in Lingdingyang Bay mainly come from the Pacific Ocean and has an irregular and semidiurnal character, with a mean tidal range between 1.0 and 1.7 m (Mao et al, 2004 with a mean tidal range of approximately 3.6 m, after which it is damped until vanishing (Cai et al, 2019).…”

“…This estuary thus acts as a dynamic zone of source-sink exchange (Geeraert et al, 2021;Jia et al, 2021;Niu et al, 2021). The principal mechanisms of nutrient transportation in this estuary are complicated because of the strong mixing of freshwater and saline water (Cai et al, 2018;Tao et al, 2020). However, there are still few studies addressing the interacting effects of river discharge and marine current on nutrient status in the PRE.…”

“…Y. Wu et al, 2016). Furthermore, these morphological changes have resulted in changes in tidal dynamics (Zhang et al, 2010;Deng and Bao, 2011). Our study can provide a new method to explore the morphological evolution, which provides scientific guidelines for management and regulation projects in estuaries.…”
