Despite a growing interest in interdisciplinary research, systematic ways of how to integrate data from different disciplines are still scarce. We argue that successful resource management relies on two key data sources: natural science data, which represents ecosystem structure and processes, and social science data, which describes people's perceptions and understanding. Both are vital, mutually complementing information sources that can underpin the development of feasible and effective policies and management interventions. To harvest the added value of combined knowledge, a uniform scaling system is needed. In this paper, we propose a standardized methodology to connect and explore different types of quantitative data from the natural and social sciences reflecting temporal trends in ecosystem quality. We demonstrate this methodology with different types of data such as fisheries stocks and mangrove cover on the one hand and community's perceptions on the other. The example data are collected from three United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Biosphere reserves and one marine park in Southeast Asia. To easily identify patterns of convergence or divergence among the datasets, we propose heat maps using colour codes and icons for language- and education-independent understandability. Finally, we discuss the limitations as well as potential implications for resource management and the accompanying communication strategies. As an important area in terms of biodiversity and fish stocks in Vietnam, Cu Lao Cham or Cham Islands (CLC) marine protected area (MPA) is under increasing threat from human activities. Conservation efforts have recently been implemented but economic analysis of the CLC MPA’s natural values did not investigate what may affect policy decisions on CLC MPA’s sustainable development. Using a structured questionnaire and a payment card technique (based on the contingent valuation method), we estimate visitors’ willingness to pay (WTP) for conservation of marine resources in the CLC MPA. The log-normal regression results indicate that the visitors’ WTP for conservation is affected by their characteristics, perceptions of environmental protection and conservation, and their assessment of the current CLC MPA entrance fee. Visitors are WTP an additional amount of US$2.26 per person for conservation while visiting the CLC MPA. This indicates that with the introduction of the proposed entrance fee (the mean WTP added to the current entrance fee), the CLC MPA management would not only have sufficient funds for their management and conservation programmes, but also that the number of visitors may decline slightly, which would reduce some of the pressure on the environment, natural resources, and coral reefs.

Seagrasses are threatened globally by multiple anthropogenic disturbances, and management of these threats requires detailed information on where losses are occurring and why. Seagrass distribution is determined by processes operating at multiple scales, yet most assessments of change to seagrass extent are done at a single spatial scale. This study applied a multi-scale approach to quantify changes in the extent of the endangered seagrass Posidonia australis over the last 10–18 years using high-resolution mapping from 15 estuaries in New South Wales, Australia. Changes in P. australis extent and relationships with anthropogenic disturbances were examined at two spatial scales: across entire estuaries and at sub-estuary “local” scales within 50 × 50 m grids. Although increases in P. australis area were observed in ten estuaries, losses at local scales were prevalent in all estuaries. No disturbances correlated with seagrass change at the estuary scale; however, the greatest losses occurred in Botany Bay which is a highly modified estuary with a heavily urbanised catchment. At local scales, losses of P. australis were strongly associated with large areas of artificial structures and distance to the sea, and the greatest increases were observed in areas with marine reserves and no oyster aquaculture. These findings highlight the importance of quantifying changes in seagrass extent at multiple scales, as estuary-scale trends can mask localised losses if they are offset by increases in other parts of the estuary. Identifying hotspots of declines and the disturbances causing them are essential for applying focussed management actions to conserve seagrasses.
