At the place where Banderitsa and Demyanitsa rivers and their tributaries ceased to be confined to their narrow valleys one of the most impressive alluvial fans in South Bulgaria is formed – the one of Glazne river. The river valley morphology, as well as the evolution and the position of the Glazne fan, are controlled by the active normal faulting in the NE slopes and foot of Pirin Mountain. Тhe Quaternary glaciations produced large volumes of debris in the river valleys. There is an agreement that the processes of sediment transfer from the mountain to the Razlog graben have been highly active at the time and immediately after the Pleistocene glaciations. As a result, in the Bulgarian geological and geomorphological reports and scientific papers, the age of the alluvial fans at the NE foot of Pirin Mountain is assumed to be Late Pleistocene–Early Holocene. The results of our studies require a re-evaluation of these ideas. Using widely accepted methods for natural hazard assessment, our field and historical research and analysis allow us to claim that the Glazne fan is active. Parts of Bansko, that are situated in the upper-middle parts of the alluvial fan, have been affected by at least two significant debris floods during the XX century. The conducted measures to control river behavior have an important effect on risk reduction, yet they lead to significant modification of the zones of active aggradation and this means that new actions against future events must be taken.

The article reviews the experience of aerial surveys using a quadcopter DJI Inspire 1 PRO (unmanned aerial vehicle, UAV) for solving problems of engineering geodynamics. It describes the application of photogrammetry to estimate quantitative parameters of the studied objects, the experience of using UAVs to study flood processes in the Tunka valley (Russia) and erosion structures in the Ulaanbaatar agglomeration (Mongolia). The first UAV‐acquired data on debris flow alluvial fans and elementary drainage basins of erosion structures are presented. The ranges of UAV flight heights were 100–150 m and 1–30 m for local and detailed aerial photography surveys, respectively. Local surveys covered relatively large objects – debris flow alluvial fans and drainage basins. Detailed aerial photography aimed to investigate the granulometric compositions of debris flow deposits and to construct transverse profiles of erosion structures. Processed aerial photos provided a basis for a schematic map showing the distribution of accumu‐ lated debris flow deposits. The granulometric compositions of coarse fractions in the debris flow deposits were de‐ termined. Based on the survey results, 3D models of the fragments of the erosion structures and their cross‐sections were constructed.

“…According to the oral information from the Arshan residents and representatives of the village administration, an intense downpour lasted through the night of 27-28 June 2014. Its front was over the left tributary of the Kyngarga river and hanging cirques located east of the river [Kadetova et al, 2016]. Early in the morning on 28 June 2014, seven debris flows from the slopes of the Tunka ridge flooded the vicinity of the Arshan village, and a water-rock flow occurred in the Kyngarga river, and a significant damage was caused to the village houses and the infrastructure of the resort [Laperdin et al, 2014;Makarov et al, 2014;Kadetova et al, 2016].…”

On 28 June 2014, debris flows brought large volumes of loose material into the Kyngarga river valley. The material was sourced from rock collapse and rock sliding on the valley slopes and delivered mainly to the river by debris flows from the side valleys of the river basin. Our field studies and analysis of the satellite images revealed that the potential debris volume received by the river amounted to about 1×10 6 m 3. The morphometric parameters of the Kyngarga river basin are favorable for the river-channel processes associated with floods, debris flows and waterrock flows.
