After the arrivals of unaccompanied migrant adolescents to Spain reached their peak in 2018, the trends have varied in the last few years, significantly decreasing in 2019 and slowly starting to increase again in 2020. These adolescents represent one of the most vulnerable groups due to their unique characteristics closely linked with the stressors encountered in their migratory process and the host society. All these experiences have been found to affect their well-being in different domains; however, very little is known about their perception of the matter, which is critical to understanding their needs and perspectives. This paper aims to look into the lived experiences of these children and how this process has affected their relational and emotional spheres, which are paramount to their development, especially during adolescence. These experiences were gathered using qualitative methodology consisting of interviews and focus groups conducted in a reception centre for unaccompanied migrant children in Catalonia. The view of these children is enriched with the contributions of the staff working in the reception centre. Analysis of the verbatims yielded six main topics revolving around frustrated expectations, obtention of legal documents, freedom, contact with the Spanish society, family and mental health. These are discussed considering how they affect emotional and relational well-being in the three stages of the migration process.

El principal objetivo de nuestra investigación consistió en desarrollar una propuesta de comunicación enmarcada en las nuevas narrativas sobre el colectivo de menores extranjeros no acompañados, uno de los colectivos migrantes más estereotipados y vulnerabilizados en España. Con tal fin se llevó a cabo una exhaustiva revisión documental y se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a representantes de ONG, de la administración y del propio colectivo en España. Como resultado del análisis, se diseñó una guía para la elaboración de campañas de comunicación basadas en nuevas narrativas, en este caso aplicadas al colectivo de menores migrantes no acompañados, pero que podría ser extrapolable a otros colectivos de migrantes. Además, siguiendo estas directrices, se implementó una campaña de comunicación real junto con estudiantes del Grado de Publicidad. En esta comunicación presentamos asimismo los resultados y conclusiones relativos a la medición de su eficacia, revelando este estudio exploratorio que se trata de una comunicación efectiva. También se ha observado una falta generalizada de conocimiento sobre el colectivo entre los encuestados, lo que indicaría la necesidad de diseñar y ejecutar campañas de comunicación similares.

The migration process for minors who migrate alone represents a complex reality, one entailing exciting life projects but which often clashes with a host society that at times responds in a way shaped by stereotypes and prejudices. In this regard, the role of public and private institutions responsible for the care and custody of these minors is of the utmost importance. This is the point of departure of this study: to explore the multicultural and inclusive practices that are implemented in the process of socio-educational support for minors who migrate alone. Taking as a reference the closest context, as a case study, and employing a qualitative methodological approach, 16 semi-structured interviews were conducted with professionals from Centers for the Protection of Minors, Institutes of Compulsory Secondary Education (secondary schools), and third-sector entities involved in socio-educational intervention with minors who migrate alone in the province of Cordoba (Spain). The results show, firstly, the complexity of the process behind the socio-educational inclusion of these minors, mainly due to their backgrounds; and, furthermore, the role of the different expectations of the professionals involved with regards to this group’s educational and labor-oriented development, along with the importance of the diversity of socio-educational intervention strategies used, focused on individualized attention and with a comprehensive approach. In conclusion, the findings of this study highlight the importance of tackling the task of socio-educational care in a coordinated manner, without forgetting the cultural backgrounds and previous experiences that these minors have when they join these protection and educational systems. It is, therefore, necessary to continue to implement these inclusive practices that promote the comprehensive development of minors and facilitate their transition to adult life, as should be done with any other minor facing situations of social vulnerability.
