deaR-Shiny: An Interactive Web App for Data Envelopment Analysis

Abstract: In this paper, we describe an interactive web application (deaR-shiny) to measure efficiency and productivity using data envelopment analysis (DEA). deaR-shiny aims to fill the gap that currently exists in the availability of online DEA software offering practitioners and researchers free access to a very wide variety of DEA models (both conventional and fuzzy models). We illustrate how to use the web app by replicating the main results obtained by Carlucci, Cirà and Coccorese in 2018, who investigate the effi… Show more

“…Fig 4 shows the graphical results of the different tourism centres’ efficiency scores depending on the used model. This figure is known as a reference plot, and it is extracted by using the deaR-shiny web interface [ 60 ]. This figure is formed of three sub-figures ( Fig 4A–4C ) that represented the results of DEA-CCR, DEA-BCC, and FDH analysis models, respectively.…”

“…Consequently, running the two models in this research is more appropriate and helps to understand the real reasons behind the efficiency scores. Secondly, running DEA and FDH in parallel was recommended by many researchers who conducted the efficiency analysis in their articles [ 60 , 61 ]. Some researchers have even gone further by inventing a new method that mixed the DEA and FDH models, which reflects the strong relationship between these two models [ 62 ].…”

“…The selected sample is represented by the 27 European countries and the year under analysis is 2021, considering the World Bank data on economic growth and the last report of the European Commission on Digital Economy and Society Index (European Commission, 2022b). Performing Data Analysis Envelopment method was supported by an academic solution, namely Data Envelopment Analysis in R (Benítez et al, 2021).…”

“…Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a mathematical programming technique widely used to evaluate the relative efficiency of a set of homogeneous Decision Making Units (DMUs) consuming the same inputs (different quantities) to produce the same outputs (different quantities) (Benítez et al, 2021). DEA is a non-parametric and linear programming-based method.…”
