deadpan, an essential pan-neural gene in Drosophila, encodes a helix-loop-helix protein similar to the hairy gene product.

Abstract: Neural precursor cells in Drosophila acquire their identity early during their formation. In an attempt to determine whether all neural precursors share a set of genetic machinery, perhaps to control properties of differentiation common to all neurons, we used the enhancer-trap method to identify several genes (pan-neural genes) that are expressed in all neurons and/or their precursors. One of the pan-neural genes is deadpan, which encodes a helix-loop-helix protein closely related to the product of the segmen… Show more

“…4D,E; additional data not shown). Whereas all four of these genes are normally expressed in the prospective wing margin (Williams et al 1991;Bier et al 1992;Blochlinger et al 1993; D. There was a notable difference in the ectopic expression of cut, which was induced only in the dorsal compartment of the wing pouch iFig. 4E; Table 2t, whereas vg, bib, and dpn, like wg, were induced in both the dorsal and ventral compartments ( Fig.…”

“…These two genes have similar pan-neural expression patterns but encode unrelated proteins: Dpn contains a bHLH domain, whereas Scrt contains a zinc-finger domain. Loss of function of either of these two pan-neural genes alone does not lead to obvious morphological disruption of the embryonic nervous system [see above for scrt, and Bier et al (1992) for dpn]. Under optimal con-ditions, animals homozygous null for each of these genes occasionally complete development and eclose.…”
