DEA Malmquist productivity index based on a double-frontier slacks-based model: Iranian road safety assessment

Abstract: Many governments in the developing world face the social and economic consequences of road accidents and mortalities. Hence, more precise evaluation of regional programs to reduce road fatalities has been a concern for many safety professionals. Road safety performance is often measured using various extensions of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), in particular the model proposed by Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes (CCR), which deals only with the radial efficiency as the objective function neither taking into accoun… Show more

“…Moreover, there is certainly no requirement and no need to take into consideration, for creating a production function model, ahead and the unit conversion of factors, respectively [24][25][26][27][28]. For the input and output-oriented model, the inputs were minimized for a required quantity of output to be attained [29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36].…”

“…In addition to these two main benchmarking approaches, scholars additionally have studied extensions of DEA, including slack‐based measures (Liu et al., 2016; Ganji and Rassafi, 2019; Yu et al., 2019) and cross‐efficiency methods (Al‐Siyabi et al., 2019; Ganji et al., 2019).…”

“…Inadequate and unreliable transportation networks are a major contributor to accidents and mortalities, and are an obstacle for economic growth in developing countries. In this regard, road safety performance has been studied by several scholars in Iran (Khademi and Choupani, 2018; Ganji and Rassafi, 2019; Ganji et al., 2019). In order to assess the efficiency and safety of intersections in road network, Pathivada and Perumal (2019) evaluate the behavior of drivers in a dilemma zone to predict whether drivers would stop or pass at a given situation.…”

“…DEA is applied to evaluate the performance and efficiency of industries, enterprises and organizations, since it has few constraints. Additionally, there is no necessity for establishing a production function model in advance and no need to consider unit conversion of factors [43][44][45][46][47]. DEA is an efficiency evaluation method for multiple decision units with multiple inputs and outputs.…”
