This article examines how French tu sais (you know') is used in everyday talk-in-interaction. In standard grammar, savoir ('to know') is described as a transitive verb. In spoken language, however, the complement of savoir in 2nd person singular is often not realised. Without its complement, tu sais can occur in various positions within a turn-constructional unit. Prior research has shown that the change in position entails a change in function. I adopt the approach of Interactional Linguistics to demonstrate that position is not the only relevant factor when it comes to tu sais. Analysing 43 French conversations, I show that the activities speakers are involved in and the degree of morpho-phonological reduction of tu sais may also be decisive factors for how tu sais contributes to the organization of social interaction. The non-reduced forms occur in activities where knowledge is negotiated whereas the reduced forms occur during assessment activities.

La présente contribution propose une analyse de cinq verbes d’apparence du français tels qu’ils émergent dans un corpus de 28h d’interactions naturelles documentant des débats publics, des débats télévisés et des réunions d’entreprise. Après avoir résumé à grands traits l’état de la littérature, qui se caractérise par des analyses sémantiques, syntaxiques et énonciatives le plus souvent effectuées sur des exemples inventés ou fortement décontextualisés, la contribution présente les données et méthodes mobilisées pour une intégration de facteurs plus pragmatiques, comme la variation en termes de genres de discours et d’environnements séquentiels/interactionnels. Cette intégration est opérée par une double analyse quantitative et qualitative. L’analyse quantitative rend compte de la distribution, significative, des lemmes par genres, par rôles communicationnels, par positionnements séquentiels et par réalisations énonciatives (notamment présence ou absence d’un pronom de première personne). L’analyse qualitative se concentre sur les variations de sens imputables aux différences de positions séquentielles (notamment la position initiative par rapport à la position réactive) et de types de portée (en termes de factualité) ; on se concentre alors sur l’expression de loin la plus représentée, il me semble (que), tout en proposant des comparaisons ponctuelles avec d’autres verbes, notamment la seconde expression la plus représentée, j’ai l’impression (que).

At the juncture between evidentiality and argumentation

The contribution discusses the theoretical problem of the relationship between evidentiality and argumentative justification. Within a framework that combines semantic and syntactic analysis with a topics-based approach to argument schemes, it is argued that the functional domains of information source and argumentation overlap in utterances in which the former is linguistically marked, rather than entailed or implicated: explicit linguistic evidential marking is a special case of argumentation. The connection between a proposition and its source gives rise to a class of arguments from a reliable procedure that are similar to arguments from authority. When the indicated source is an inferential procedure (rather than direct experience or hearsay), the evidential argument may be combined with additional arguments that lay out part of that procedure. The particular case of inferential sources is illustrated by means of an analysis of weakly grammaticalized constructions in Italian, based on verbs of thought, communication and perception that relate a propositional complement to a subject NP or to source / place complements of the verb. The analysis shows that such further complements can either refine the categorization of the inferential source signalled by the verb, thereby contributing to the main argument from a reliable procedure, or express a premise that allows the hearer to reconstruct the internal structure of the procedure.
