Cet article entend analyser sous l’angle de la transmission deux documentaires consacrés au fiasco que fut le festival de rock Woodstock 99 qui s’est achevé par des émeutes. Nous proposons tout d’abord une analyse de la tentative de transmission patrimoniale et mémorielle opérée par les promoteurs du festival autour du nom d’évènement « Woodstock » et sa remise en cause autonymique par les témoins interrogés dans les films. Nous voyons ensuite comment les régimes de retransmission télévisuelle et de transmission symbolique lors des concerts ont abouti à un échec présenté comme inéluctable. Nous cherchons enfin à comprendre en quoi, face à cette transmission intergénérationnelle imposée, les réactions violentes des spectateurs, encouragés ou non par les musiciens, peuvent être lues dans le macro-récit documentaire et dans les micro-discours des témoins de ces films comme un acte communicationnel de défiance et de rébellion.
