De Garengeot’s hernia: Case report and literature review

Abstract: HighlightsDe Garengeot’s hernias constitute an extremely rare condition associated with emergency surgery.Suspicion and experience are crucial for correct management, as no therapeutic or diagnosis consensus has been reached.A single surgical procedure can be performed to treat both pathologies; incarcerated hernia and strangulated appendix. An open preperitoneal approach permits correct visualization of the sac contents and permits appendectomy and hernia repair. When a complication is found, such as local perf… Show more

“…The most common procedure is the open anterior approach; this allows exploration of the hernia sac and rapid treatment of its contents, routine appendectomy through a single incision, and preperitoneal repair of the femoral hernia. 2 If the hernia sac is irreducible, a second incision using McEvedy’s high approach can facilitate reduction of the hernia after division of the lacunar ligament. 9 , 10 McBurney incision and subumbilical midline laparotomy are also common additional incisions.…”

“…It accounts for 0.5-5% of all femoral hernias, it is more common in women (6:1) and it mainly affects the elderly population. The incidence of appendicitis in this type of hernia is as low as 0.08-0.13% of all De Garengeot hernias [1][2].…”

“…These are rare hernias, accounting for 0.5–1% of all femoral hernias [ 3 ]. The presence of the appendix within a femoral hernia was first described in 1731 by René Jacques Croissant De Garengeot [ 4 ]. The incidence of De Garengeot’s hernia cited in the literature is fewer than 100 cases [ 5 ].…”
