Summary Vehicular ad‐hoc network (VANET) is an emerging field of mobile ad‐hoc network (MANET) which facilitates intelligent transport system (ITS). It thus helps in enhancing the real‐time driving experience and road safety. Due to association of VANET with life‐critical applications, there is a dire need to understand each and every aspect of it in terms of architecture, security, applications, routing, and so forth, before bringing it into implementation. Although there exist numerous studies on VANETs, they tend to cover only individual aspects of it. This first of its kind survey aims to provide a combined and thorough study of each aspect of VANET along with their advantages and limitations in a single solid document. Different architectures proposed till date have been explored along with their shortcomings and the possible applications which are supported in VANETs. Comparison of various wireless technologies used in VANET based on the range requirement of different VANET applications and various routing protocols that are best suited for VANET on the basis of the application requirement is done. It also discusses the various security attacks possible in VANET, the risks associated with them, and the possible security solutions available for these attacks. Various optimization and bio‐inspired techniques as well as intrusion detection systems for enhancing security in VANET are also analyzed. Finally, various simulators have been investigated, and comprehensive analysis has been done with respect to the feasibility of implementation of VANETs in these simulators. This research is believed to assist the researchers in understanding the current state of research in VANETs.

Future intelligent transportation systems (ITS) hold the promise of supporting the operation of safety-critical applications, such as cooperative self-driving cars. For that purpose, the communications among vehicles and with the road-side infrastructure will need to fulfil the strict real-time guarantees and challenging dependability requirements. These safety requisites are particularly important in wireless vehicular networks, where road traffic presents several threats to human life. This paper presents a systematic survey on fault tolerance techniques in the area of vehicular communications. The work provides a literature review of publications in journals and conferences proceedings, available through a set of different search databases (IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, Scopus and ScienceDirect). A systematic method, based on the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) Statement was conducted in order to identify the relevant papers for this survey. After that, the selected articles were analysed and categorised according to the type of redundancy, corresponding to three main groups (temporal, spatial and information redundancy). Finally, a comparison of the core features among the different solutions is presented, together with a brief discussion regarding the main drawbacks of the existing solutions, as well as the necessary steps to provide an integrated fault-tolerant approach to the future vehicular communications systems.

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) is a collection of wireless mobile nodes, which form temporary networks over infrastructure-less environments. Over the last few years, Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) technology has been considered as an active research area. VANET is a sub class of MANET with some unique characteristics such as fast vehicle speed, frequent topology changes and restricted mobility on roads. The communication between vehicles provides a new avenue for different types of applications such as safety, traffic management, entertainment, etc. These applications are categorized based on how data is transmitted from source to destination. The performance of such applications does not only depend on routing protocols, but also on the data dissemination mechanism. Data dissemination in VANETs is a significant factor, which can be accomplished using four different models: Dynamic Source Dynamic Destination (DSDD), Dynamic Source Static Destination (DSSD), Static Source Dynamic Destination (SSDD), and Static Source Static Destination (SSSD). Each one of these models is suitable for specific types of applications. In this paper, the authors study and evaluate the fault-tolerance of VANET under different data dissemination techniques in terms of throughput, average End-to-End delay, and percentage of packet loss. the authors used NCTUns 6.0 network simulator and IEEE 802.11p wireless communication standard. Their findings show that DSDV is more fault-tolerant than both DSR and AODV in terms of packet loss percentage for all dissemination techniques. However, AODV shows better performance in average End-to-End delay and throughput under DSDD and SSDD techniques.
