DC Current Control for a Single-Stage Current Source Inverter in Motor Drive Application

Abstract: The Current Source Inverter (CSI) is a power electronics topology that allows for the realization of variable speed drives (VSD). Compared to the most common Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), which can be directly connected to a voltage source, the CSI needs a pre-stage to generate a constant current bus. This paper therefore seeks to challenge this 'accepted' consideration that a CSI always needs this pre-circuit and seeks to remove this circuit by proposing an innovative i dc Current Control scheme. The propose… Show more

“…Although a simple MPPT control structure is introduced, limited experimental results and information on the control system are presented [14]. Meanwhile in [16,17], reverse-blocking IGBTs with Phasor Pulse Width Modulation are used in three-phase CSI which enable higher system efficiency, higher boost ratio and elimination of stepup stages by means of boost converter or step up transformer. This work is verified using hardware prototype of 2kW, 208Vl-I, rms and varying dc input voltage between 60V to 120Vdc.…”

“…It is worth repeating that a single-phase converter would always need some kind of active decoupling connected either in parallel or in series, to match the different power flow of the panels and grid. It is also worth noting that having a continuous fixed current in the inductor is not necessary, since the current value can be changed even without a front-end [20], and inductor current oscillation can be compensated for with proper Pulse Area Modulation [21]. For simplicity's sake and to better focus on the ground leakage current problem, these aspects have not been introduced in this paper, and a simple DC-DC buck converter is used, although it would not represent a practical application.…”

“…On the other hands, there are many AC motor drives perform the inverter as CSI, such as field-oriented control (FOC) and induction motor. CSI is very rarely implemented alternative to the VSI but quite well known for its function [4]. Nevertherless, the significant practical application of CSI regarding of self-commuted variant is not found yet [5].…”
