Daylighting, Daylight Simulation and Public Health: Low-Energy Lighting for Optimal Vision/Visual Acuity and Health/Wellbeing

Abstract: Indoor Ecology (IE) is an emerging research field that aims to develop new approaches and technologies which allow indoor environments and occupants to dynamically co-adapt to each other in order to enhance human wellbeing and productivity while simultaneously optimizing energy efficiency. The central idea in IE is that humans, building systems and the interior environment form a single, integrated complex 'ecosystem'. One way to IE optimization is though lighting, especially daylighting and daylight simulatio… Show more

“…Several studies back this up:  [21] mentioned that in well-designed interior zones, daylight improves visual quality and mental health benefits that are expensive and difficult to replicate with artificial lighting, it also added that Sunlight appears to be the best lighting source for schools because it provides an adequate quantity and spectrum of light as well as the proper timing and duration of light exposure.  According to [22], people who work in natural sunlight are more productive, effective, and happy than those who work in traditional artificial light.…”

“…Electrical energy consumption is one of the factors that most impact the environment and the economy because this resource is fundamental for the functioning and development of the human being [1][2][3][4][5]. According to the European Commission, approximately 2900 TWh of artificial energy are consumed annually, leading to the emission of 1.7 million tons of CO2 [6][7][8]. This alarming scenario has led to an increased interest in developing low-cost, highperformance, and energy-efficient technologies, materials, and devices.…”

“…Human health and wellness are key topics in fields that look at modern social and economic aspects, along with the improvement of the quality of individual life [1,2]. These trends of focusing on human health, wellness, and individual quality of life have also been emphasized as important in the areas of architecture and interior design [3,4]. On average, people spend 90% of their working hours in indoor spaces.…”
