Daycare Center Attendance Buffers the Effects of Maternal Authoritarian Parenting Style on Physical Aggression in Children

Abstract: A maternal authoritarian style has been related to the development of physical aggression during childhood and later future social problems; however, not too many studies have detected other than individual or family factors that may buffer this maternal effect. This work examines whether daycare center attendance may moderate the relationships between a mother authoritarian style and physical aggression. The study sample was 72 (40 girls) kindergarten children from Spain. Parents were asked to complete two qu… Show more

“…Finally, the insignificant relationship between parental secure attachment and negative parenting can be explained by the parent's belief. For example, the authoritarian parenting, which is considered to be a negative parenting style that has several negative effects (Fuentes et al, 2015;Muñoz et al, 2017), can help develop offspring's secure attachment to some extent, because authoritarian parents promote children's understanding of rules and the ability to establish proper expectations, which are beneficial for building good interpersonal relationships (Cramer, 2019;Kochanska et al, 1989). According to the IWM theory, such securely attached people will "orientate" children to enhance their social development in some circumstances, but sometimes "the method of orientation" could be negative, such as the punishment after children's misbehaviors.…”

“…Authoritarian parenting during preschool years has been associated with adolescents who are less affiliative, experience more internalizing problems including symptoms of depression, and have lower self‐esteem (Baumrind et al, ; King, Vidourek, & Merianos, ). A maternal authoritarian parenting style has also been shown to predict externalizing in the form of greater physical aggression in kindergarten students (Muñoz et al, ). One of the key milestones in the socioemotional development of children is their development of a theory of mind.…”
