Day-neutral Strawberries for High Tunnel Production in the Central United States

Abstract: Specialty crop production in high tunnel systems has greatly expanded in the central United States. Strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa) may be a viable high-value crop for high tunnel growers, but fall-planted production systems have a high opportunity cost in regard to winter production space. This study investigates the feasibility of spring-planted day-neutral strawberry cultivars in a high tunnel production system in Kansas. Furthermore, the goals o… Show more

“…High tunnels are frequently utilized in local vegetable production throughout the United States (Carey et al., ) and have been adopted by many local vegetable growers in the Central United States (Kansas City Food Hub Working Group, ). This growing system has been successfully used for protection from the weather elements, (Lang, ), increasing yield (Lamont, ; Waterer, ), increasing product quality (Lamont, ; Rogers & Wszelaki ), season extension (Borelli et al., ; Galinato & Miles, ; Gude et al., ) and reducing crop disease (Hanson, Marks, & Isaacs, ; Lang, ; Rogers & Wszelaki ) of fresh fruits and vegetables. Spinach, Spinacia oleracea , is a cold season crop frequently grown in high tunnels in the U.S. Great Plains Area (Knewtson, Carey, & Kirkham, ).…”

“…Growing strawberries in protected cultivation has been shown to increase the length of the local growing season in many countries. Significant season extension in the US and Canada has been achieved growing what the industry calls "dayneutral" strawberry cultivars in high tunnels (Gude et al, 2018;Rowley et al, 2011) or low tunnels (Anderson et al, 2019;Condori et al, 2017;Lewers et al, 2017;Orde et al, 2018;Petran et al, 2017;Pritts and McDermott, 2017;Van Sterthem et al, 2017). In New York, New Hampshire, and Maryland, the extra cost of establishing low tunnels was calculated to pay for itself in the first year from increased production from five California-bred cultivars (Lewers et al, 2017;Orde et al, 2018;Pritts and McDermott, 2017), and differences between cultivar yields were observed for cultivar and planting dates (Pritts and McDermott, 2017).…”

“…Farms with strawberry tend to have a diverse mix of other crops to extend the fruit and vegetable marketing season. Growers have been adopting season extension techniques over the past 20 years, including AHP, summer production of day-neutral cultivars, and high and low tunnels so strawberries can be marketed along with other summer and fall produce (Gude et al, 2018). This has extended strawberry marketing up to 5 months.…”

“…By managing these systems, growers can almost triple the length of harvest compared with growing using PMR alone. This production strategy has allowed growers to capture a preexisting high-value retail consumer market for strawberries (Gude et al, 2018).…”
