Day‐case holmium laser enucleation of the prostate for gland volumes of < 60 mL: early experience

Abstract: OBJECTIVE To examine the safety and effectiveness of holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), as a day‐case procedure for selected patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS Thirty‐eight men underwent HoLEP as a day‐case procedure; they were discharged with an indwelling catheter for 48 h with ‘Hospital In The Home’ nursing management. They were evaluated for symptomatic and flow rate improvements after 3 months. Morbidity, length of stay, the duration of catheterization and readmission rates were evaluated. RES… Show more

“…Only one randomized trial has shown that the weight of the gland retrieved was less compared to that in the TURP group [13] . In another study, Larner et al [14] retrieved only 7 g for a mean gland size of 35 g. This study was reported as an early experience, as in our study. The reasons explained were excessive vaporization and desiccation of the prostatic adenoma due to laser energy.…”

“…TRUS measurements following prostatectomy have been reported (table 2) [10][11][12][13][14]. The remaining prostate volume was 30.1-61.1 ml for TURP, 28-37.38 ml for holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HOLEP) and 17.3 ml in TUE [10,13,14].…”

“…Another randomized trial of men with prostate volumes less than 40 g demonstrated that day stay HoLEP surgery was achievable, with a mean hospital stay of 12.3 hours [ 20 ].…”
