The first researcher to recognize trisomy 13 and the second to report on trisomy 18, Dr. Smith was also involved in the discovery of several conditions associated with birth defects, which included Aase-Smith, Smith-Lemli-Opitz, and Marshall-Smith syndromes (Levenson, 2010).
