“…Optically bleaching experiments using UV-lamps or solar simulators demonstrated that the Alecentre of quartz has two components, one is optically bleachable (OBAT) and the other is optically unbleachable (DAT) (Falgu eres et al, 1988;Tanaka et al, 1997;Toyoda et al, 2000;Tissoux et al, 2007). On the contrary, the Ti-centres can be totally bleached during exposure to sunlight (Toyoda et al, 2000;Tissoux et al, 2007).…”

“…Geomorphic features such as marine terraces can be dated to determine the rate of uplift (e.g. Tanaka et al 1997; Choi et al 2003a, b, 2006), from which tectonic stability can be deduced. Alternatively, thick basin‐fill sediments can be dated to determine subsidence rates, as was done for the southwestern coastal plain of Taiwan (Chen et al 2003).…”

“…The timing of marine terrace formation along the southeastern coastline of the Korean Peninsula (Choi et al 2003a, b, 2006) and the west coast of central Japan (Tanaka et al 1997) has been determined using luminescence dating methods. In both areas, bleaching experiments were performed, using either modern analogues (Choi et al 2003b, 2006) or laboratory‐controlled illumination conditions (Tanaka et al 1997) to determine the residual signal for TL dating to confirm the well‐bleached nature of sediments for optical dating. These studies determined that both TL and OSL can be employed, but that the light‐insensitive TL signal should be determined and the ages corrected accordingly.…”

“…In Japan, Tanaka et al (1997) successfully used the multiple-aliquot additive dose (MAAD) method to determine a quartz OSL age for a marine terrace on the Noto Peninsula corresponding to MIS 5e. Barreto et al (2002) also used the MAAD quartz OSL method to successfully date marine terraces in northeastern Brazil formed during MISs 7 and 5e.…”
