Dataset of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in a Mediterranean coastal wetland

Abstract: The dataset provides information on Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) detected in the Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain), a typical Mediterranean coastal wetland. These PPCPs constitute an important group of organic pollutants highly representative of the human impact. The concentrations values measured in soil, sediment and water and the statistical relationship of contaminants between them and with the environmental parameters could help to understand their fate in different c… Show more

“…The exposition stage took place during days 0-28, when mussels were exposed to contaminants via water (10 µg/L and food (10 ng per specimen and day). Although 10 µg/L is a concentration higher than the typically found in aquatic Mediterranean environments (Campo et al, 2016;Köck-Schulmeyer et al, 2021;Sadutto et al, 2021a), some compounds have been detected at similar and higher concentrations in aquatic environments (Barbieri et al, 2021;Calvo et al, 2021) and WWTP effluents (Golovko et al, 2021;Sadutto et al, 2021a). Furthermore, it was still significantly lower than in other bioaccumulation studies (Cui et al, 2019;Le Bris and Pouliquen, 2004;Mezzelani et al, 2016).…”

“…All these sectors are characterized by the reuse of treated wastewaters in the rice fields during the cultivation period [85]. The results pointed out that the quality of the effluents from the WWTPs is deficient in removing nutrients [45][46][47][48] and additionally can also be rich in emerging contaminants [48][49][50]. Overall, it seems inappropriate to use effluents from these WWTPs for agriculture in the Natural Park of the Albufera.…”

“…However, this complex irrigation system connects many of the canals with the sewerage infrastructures of the surrounding municipalities, receiving industrial and urban discharges. These sewage effluents are considered sources of nutrients [45,46] and emerging pollutants, such as perfluoroalkyl substances, organophosphorus flame retardants and pharmaceuticals and personal care products, among others [47][48][49][50].…”

“…After selecting the extraction solvent with the most efficient recoveries and the lowest relative standard deviation (RSD), a second series of experiments were performed in which different d-SPE sorbents were evaluated to clean the extracts and remove interfering co-eluents from the matrix. The Z-Sep sorbent has previously demonstrated its utility for removing matrix components from samples containing a large number of both polar and non-polar analytes [ 12 , 36 , 40 ]. The common sorbent that all Z-Sep variants have is silica gel and zirconium dioxide, which is an amphoteric oxide that presents multiple interaction pathways with matrix components.…”

“…Due to the low expected levels of CECs and the complexity of the matrix, sensitive and robust analytical methods are essential. Ultrasound-assisted solvent extraction (UAE) is one of the most common extraction methods for CECs in aquatic biota [ 9 , 12 , 21 32 ]. Extraction of complex biological matrices typically features a clean-up step to ensure removal of co-extracted matrix components that otherwise may interfere in the quantification.…”
