Background: Relational databases have been a prevalent technology for decades, using SQL (Structured Query Language) to manage data. However, the emergence of new technologies, such as the web and the cloud, has brought the requirement to handle more complex data. NewSQL is the latest technology that incorporates the ability to scale and ensures the availability of NoSQL (Not Only SQL) without losing the ACID properties (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) associated with relational databases. Methods: We evaluated CockroachDB, MariaDB Xpand, and VoltDB with OSSpal methodology and experimentally using the Star Schema Benchmark (SSB). The scalability and performance capabilities of each database were assessed. Results: Applying the OSSpal methodology, the results showed that MariaDB Xpand outperformed CockroachDB and VoltDB. On the other hand, we concluded that with Star Schema Benchmark, CockroachDB had better scalability, while VoltDB had a faster query execution time. Conclusions: CockroachDB and VoltDB are the best performing databases in terms of scalability and performance.

For more than 40 years, the relational database management system (RDBMS) and the atomicity, consistency, isolation, durability (ACID) transaction guarantees provided through its use have been the standard for data storage. The advent of Big Data created a need for new storage approaches that led to NoSQL technologies, which rely on basic availability, soft-state, eventual consistency (BASE) transactions. Over the last decade, NewSQL RDBMS technology has emerged, providing the benefits of RDBMS ACID transaction guarantees and the performance and scalability of NoSQL databases. The reliance on virtualization in IT has continued to grow, but an investigation of current academic literature identified a void regarding the performance impact of virtualization of NewSQL databases. To help address the lack of research in this area, a quantitative experimental study was designed and carried out to answer the central research question, "What is the performance impact of Type-I virtualization on a NewSQL RDBMS?" VMware ESXi virtualization software, NuoDB RDBMS, and OLTP-Bench software were used to execute a mixed-load benchmark. Performance metrics were collected comparing bare metal and virtualized environments, and the data analyzed statistically to evaluate five hypotheses related to CPU utilization, memory utilization, disk and network input-output (I/O) rates, and database transactions per second. Findings indicated a negative performance impact on CPU and memory utilization, as well as network I/O rates. Performance improvements were noted in disk I/O rates and database transactions-per-second.

Selama bertahun-tahun database relasional menjadi solusi untuk penyimpanan data sampai datang era Big Data. Kemudian database non-relasional (yang dikenal sebagai sistem database NoSQL) mulai dikembangkan sebagai solusi database yang mempunyai kecepatan tinggi dan scalable untuk menangani volume data yang terus meningkat. Di sisi lain, NoSQL mempunyai beberapa kekurangan, diantaranya : tidak support ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) dan beberapa sistem database NoSQL tidak support SQL. NewSQL merupakan pengembangan dari NoSQL namun mendukung fitur ACID dan SQL. Ada banyak sistem database NewSQL yang dikembangkan saat ini dengan arsitektur, fitur dan implementasi yang bervariasi. Dalam paper ini, kami mencoba melakukan quick review mengenai perkembangan database mulai dari database relasional yang tradisional, NoSQL hingga NewSQL. Kemudian dideskripsikan satu persatu mengenai sistem database NewSQL yang ada. Pada bagian akhir kami mencoba membandingkan beberapa database NewSQL pada lima aspek, diantaranya : Ease of Use, Features & Functionality, Advanced Features, Integration dan Performance. Dari hasil perbandingan, pada aspek Ease of Use c-treeACE mendapat nilai tertinggi sedangkan Apache Trafodion menjadi yang terendah. Pada aspek Features & Functionality TIBCO ActiveSpaces menjadi yang tertinggi sedangkan VoltDB mendapat skor terendah. Selanjutnya, Altibase mendapat skor tertinggi pada aspek Advanced Features dan Apache Trafodion kembali menjadi yang terendah. Pada aspek Integration, skor tertinggi ada pada CockroachDB dan terendah ada pada Pivotal GemFire XD. Terakhir, pada aspek Performance, ActorDB menjadi yang tertinggi dan Apache Trafodion menjadi yang terendah lagi.
