Data Visualization on Mobile Devices

Abstract: As mobile visualization is increasingly used and new mobile device form factors and hardware capabilities continuously emerge, it is timely to reflect on what has been discovered to date and to look into the future. This workshop will bring together researchers, designers, and practitioners from relevant application and research fields, including visualization, personal informatics, and data journalism. We will work on identifying a research agenda for mobile data visualization as well as to collect and propag… Show more

“…Mirroring the rise of visualization on mobile devices, the body of research literature proposing and evaluating visual encoding and interaction techniques for mobile devices has also emerged in recent years [53], including efforts to establish a research agenda in this area [42]. This body of work spans different datatypes, including continuous time-series data [18], hierarchical data [3], and spatiotemporal data [39], as well as various application areas, from healthcare [19] to navigation [36].…”

“…Ideally, embedded visualizations are responsive, that is, they are able to adapt themselves automatically to external contextual requirements. The notion of responsive visualizations has mostly been discussed in the context of mobile visualization [14,44]. Recent research suggests that the design of a responsive visualization should consider layout, data density, and interaction-related aspects [3,4,31].…”

“…Recently, there have been two efforts in establishing a community around mobile data visualization: (1) the "Data Visualization on Mobile Devices" workshop at CHI 2018 [2] (mobilevis.github.io) and (2) the "Mobile Data Visualization" Dagstuhl Seminar in July 2019 [11] (tinyurl.com/mobilevis-dagstuhl). We call for visualization researchers to attract researchers from related communities to advance this important and exciting topic.…”

“…Published by the IEEE Computer Society c 2019 IEEE to make positive changes in their lives through better understanding of themselves [1]. The need and use of data visualization on mobile devices (e.g., tablets, smartphones, smartwatches) is increasingly prevalent in practice, enabling people to access data without relying on a desktop or laptop [2]. Advancements in both software and hardware technologies give us opportunities to provide people with disabilities with greater access to data visualization.…”
