Data Shepherding in Nanotechnology. The Exposure Field Campaign Template

Abstract: In this paper, we demonstrate the realization process of a pragmatic approach on developing a template for capturing field monitoring data in nanomanufacturing processes. The template serves the fundamental principles which make data scientifically Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR principles), as well as encouraging individuals to reuse it. In our case, the data shepherds’ (the guider of data) template creation workflow consists of the following steps: (1) Identify relevant stakeholders, … Show more

“…The role of the shepherd is to capture data, protocols, and instrumentations and to help with data reporting, merging, and harmonization. The most important part of this role is the implementation of the FAIRification process with multiple stakeholders who are unaccustomed with the notion of FAIRification process. It is outside of the scope of this manuscript to provide details regarding the FAIR initiatives and the efforts in place in the EU. The reader can refer to the following footnotes , to get an appreciation of the current initiatives regarding FAIR data.…”

“…The first two published studies in the data shepherding in nanotechnology series [35,36] visualized the roadmap toward case-specific data-catching templates for FAIRification rationales in the ASINA project (see Figure 1) with the support from the Transnational Access program of the H2020 NanoCommons project. With the assistance and supervision of the data shepherd, we show the process from the recommended framework to template construction, with a focus on antimicrobial measures.…”

“…The added element of this study in the series presented [35] is that different partners act as supplementary data creators following a chain of experimental designs that will guide the SSbD criteria. In Furxhi et al [36], data capturing served to facilitate computational exposure models for the assessment of exposure determinants or mass flow balance models that simulate emission particle rates in occupational environments. In this case of antimicrobial capacity, the data will be used for computational purposes in an SSbD framework [37].…”

“…The data shepherd of ASINA has initiated the design and implementation of a data FAIRication process with multiple stakeholders who are unaccustomed with the notion of FAIR process, that is currently under development. 22,23 The process of data gathering and ensuring data quality allows the computational decision tool (ASINA Expert System, ASINA-ES) to utilise most of the data, existing or generated within the project.…”
