Objective: Drug poisoning is the most prevalent type of poisoning throughout the world that can occur intentional or unintentional. Standard way for data gathering with uniform definitions is a requirement for preventing, controlling and managing of drug poisoning management. The purpose of this study was to develop a minimum data set, as an initial step, for a drug poisoning registry system in Iran. Methods: This was descriptive and cross-sectional study that was performed in 2019. As the first step a comprehensive literature review was performed to retrieve related resources in Persian and English languages. For the second step the medical records of drug poisoning patients at Afzalipour hospital affiliated to Kerman University of Medical Sciences were assessed. Related data from these two steps were gathered by a checklist. Finally, a questionnaire that was created based on the checklist data elements and had three columns of 'essential,' 'useful, but not essential', and 'not essential' was used to reach a consensus on the data elements. Then the content validity ratio and the mean of experts' judgments were calculated for each data element. The Cronbach's alpha value for the entire questionnaire was obtained 0.9. Results: The minimum data set of a drug poisoning registry system was categorised into the administrative part with three sections including 32 data elements, and clinical parts with six sections including 81 data elements. Conclusion: This study provides a minimum data set for development of a drug poisoning registry system. Collecting this minimum data set is critical for helping policy makers and healthcare providers to prevent, control and manage drug poisoning.

Background: Poisoning is a common condition worldwide that requires precise evaluation of the quality and rapid management. Registry plays an essential role in the management of toxins. This study aimed to examine the features and processes of poisoning registries. Methods: This review study was conducted in 2020. Several searches were conducted in the following scientific databases: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science using a combination of keywords, such as “data management, registry, poison, and toxic”. The review of titles, abstracts, and full-text of the selected articles was independently performed by two researchers. Besides, the obtained data were analyzed based on the research objectives by the content analysis method. Results: Some critical features of registries were considered the confidentiality of patients’ information, i.e., equipped with various technologies, such as Geographical Information System (GIS), warning systems, searches, and text retrieval tools. The most common sources of case findings were self-reported contacts by individuals and healthcare professionals to poison control centers. Moreover, the main tool for data collection was electronic forms. The major indices of data quality were the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of the data. Phone calls were usually made at follow-ups. Conclusion: The registry’s features and processes are an essential and fundamental step to achieve the registry goals, as well as designing and developing these systems. It is recommended that the registries be equipped with various technologies to better manage the exposure cases. It is recommended to use educational, incentive, competitive, participatory, and motivational mechanisms among all organizations and individuals involved in poisoning registry programs.

Background: Substance abuse has been recognized as a national problem in which poisoning with pharmaceutical drugs, opioids and alcohols is a common problem in Iran. Due to the lack of a comprehensive information system related to Substance abuse, despite the systematic information in health services, and to achieve this goal, the purpose of this research was to develop a registry system for substance abuse poisoning in - Urmia University of Medical Sciences. Methods: This research is a practical development study that was done in 4 phases. In the first phase, minimum data set (MDS) of the system were determined. In the second phase, the registration system was designed. The third phase includes the implementation of the system, and finally, the system was evaluated by QUIS questionnaire. Results: A total of 58 data elements in 6 classes were recognized as essential for this system from the point of view of experts. The system was implemented on the ASP.NET platform using C# language and SQL Server database in the poisoning department of Taleghani Hospital in Urmia. The evaluation of usability of the system showed score obtained in the 6 main categories were in set of terms of the system 8.52, screen 8.36, ability to learn 8.8, overall functionality 8.04, user interface 7.98, and the overall interaction is 7.73 respectively. Conclusion: Considering the capabilities of the system for registering poisonings caused by drug abuse, it seems necessary to implement this system in the form of a national network, in order to make the necessary interventions to control drug abuse while using resources efficiently.
