Data report: Mg/Ca values of Globorotalia tumida from early Pliocene to present, Site U1338

Abstract: The equatorial Pacific thermocline is a critical component in determining the ocean-atmosphere interactions of the tropics. During the Pliocene warm period, the tropical thermocline was warm and/or deep and shoaled toward present day. Here we use Mg/Ca values of subsurface-dwelling Globorotalia tumida to reconstruct subsurface temperatures at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1338.

“…These increased δ 18 O values correspond with decreased δ 13 C values at all the sites. This apparent strong, short-lived cooling and increase in productivity coincide with MIS glacial MG4 (Figure 6f; Lisiecki & Raymo, 2005 (Dekens et al, 2007;Fedorov et al, 2006;Ford et al, 2012Ford et al, , 2015Ford et al, , 2018 may have provided saltier waters to the KCE region. The WPWP increases in surface water salinity during modern El Nino events (Delcroix et al, 1998;Maes, 2000) and could have behaved similarly during Pliocene El Padre events.…”

“…This sea surface salinity increase could be due to two major factors. First, the equatorial Pacific El Padre mean state (Dekens et al, 2007;Fedorov et al, 2006;Ford et al, 2012Ford et al, , 2015Ford et al, , 2018 may have provided saltier waters to the KCE region.
