Data on the epidemiology of heart failure in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract: In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), chronic non-communicable diseases and cardiovascular diseases in particular, are progressively taking over infectious diseases as the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Heart failure is a major public health problem in the region. We summarize here available data on the prevalence, aetiologies, treatment, rates and predictors of mortality due to heart failure in SSA.

“…The number of persons living with HTN globally is expected to rise to about 1.5 billion by the year 2025 . Sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) bears a great burden of HTN, which is the leading cause of heart failure and stroke and accounts for over 80% of all cardiovascular disease‐related deaths . In Cameroon, the prevalence of HTN increased over 5‐fold between 1994 and 2003, with a recent community‐based study estimating the prevalence of HTN in the general population at 29.7% .…”
