Synthesis and characterization of aluminum-based adsorbent and application in fluoride removal from aqueous solution

A novel adsorbent was obtained by a facile precipitation method and was used for fluoride removal from aqueous solution. Mineralogical and physicochemical characterization of the adsorbent was carried out by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Energy Dispersive X-Ray attached to Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM-EDX), BET Specific Surface Area(SSAN2BET) analysis and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR). The effect of various operational parameters such as contact time, initial fluoride concentration, (20-160 mg L-1) adsorbent dose (1-6 g L-1) and initial pH solution (3-11) was evaluated in batch procedures at room temperature (25±2°C). The results of the batch adsorption experiments proved that 24 h of contact time was sufficient for attaining equilibrium. The maximum wastewater defluoridation (84.91%) was obtained for 40 mg L-1 and 3 g L-1 of initial fluoride concentration and adsorbent dose, respectively. It appears that there was no significant effect on the F- removal over a wide range of pH 3-11. Kinetic studies revealed that fluoride adsorption fitted well to pseudo-second-order. The adsorption isotherm of fluoride sorption indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity was noted to be 43.29 mg g-1. Batch adsorption data was better described by Langmuir isotherm confirming monolayer adsorption with homogenous distribution of active sites and without interaction between adsorbed molecules. The obtained results indicated that the ion exchange is probably the main mechanism involved in the F- adsorption by the aluminium-based adsorbent.

This study was conducted to investigate the ionic and uoride concentrations in borehole water and its associated health risk potentials to residents of Makurdi town and its environs, Benue state, Nigeria. An aggregate of sixty-three (63) groundwater samples were retrieved from boreholes in twenty-one ( 21) diverse points within the study area and assessed for its physico-chemical composition with emphasis on uoride content and health risk potentials following standard eld and laboratory procedures. It was observed that uoride content in the sampled water exceeded the stipulated safe limit of 1.5 mg/L in about 33.33% of the total samples and ranged from 0.34-2.06 mg/L with an average of 1.26 ± 0.41 mg/L. Moderate a rmative relationships were observed to exist between F − and TDS; F − and EC; F − and Cl − ; F − and NO 3 − in the water samples indicative of a common source pollution. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed that high uoride content in the water samples was associated with the dissolutions from quartzite and shale into the underlying deep aquifers. Fluoride risk assessment indicated that the hazard quotient (HQ) for ingestion of uoride laden water exceeded the threshold value in 66.7, 71.4, 52.4 and 9.5% of the samples for infants, children, teenagers, and adults respectively. It is concluded that groundwater in Makurdi is contaminated with excessive uoride levels in most locations; hence, the ndings of this study would serve as a basis for policy makers and regulatory bodies towards ameliorating the menace of groundwater contamination within the study area. In this paper, fluoride geochemistry and health risk of groundwater in Coimbatore district is studied. The order of dominance of ions were HCO3 > Cl > SO4 > CO3 and Na > Ca > Mg > K. Alkaline groundwater and the dominance of HCO3 and Na is favourable for the fluoride enrichment. Around 46% of the samples, N–NE regions, have F− higher than permissible limit of 1.5 mg/L. Pink granites, charnockite and gneisses in lithology is the possible origin of F−. However, NO3 vs F plot shows positive trend in some samples, indicating anthropogenic inputs of F−. Correlation plots of F− was trending positive with pH, HCO3 and Na and but negative for Ca, indicating the control of these ions in F− mobility. This result is supported by undersaturation of fluorite and supersaturation of carbonates. Four significant principal components were derived, which have explained 87% of the total variation. PC1 has high factor loadings for EC, Ca, Mg Na, Cl, SO4, NO3 indicating both natural and anthropogenic influences. PC2, PC3 and PC4 have higher loading for pH and HCO3, K and HCO3 and F−, respectively, indicating geogenic factors in the F− enrichment. Human health risk assessment (HHRA) by ingestion and dermal pathways were calculated using Hazard Quotient HQ and Hazard Index (HI). 27% of males, 36% of females and 39% of the children have HI > 1, posing noncarcinogenic risks.
