Skill Needs for Early Career Researchers—A Text Mining Approach

Research and development activities are one of the main drivers for progress, economic growth and wellbeing in many societies. This article proposes a text mining approach applied to a large amount of data extracted from job vacancies advertisements, aiming to shed light on the main skills and demands that characterize first stage research positions in Europe. Results show that data handling and processing skills are essential for early career researchers, irrespective of their research field. Also, as many analyzed first stage research positions are connected to universities, they include teaching activities to a great extent. Management of time, risks, projects, and resources plays an important part in the job requirements included in the analyzed advertisements. Such information is relevant not only for early career researchers who perform job selection taking into account the match of possessed skills with the required ones, but also for educational institutions that are responsible for skills development of the future R&D professionals.

One of the most dynamically changing parts of the labor market relates to information technologies. Skillsets demanded by employers in this sphere vary across different industries, organizations and even certain vacancies. The educational system in the most cases lags behind such changes, so that obsolete skillsets are being taught. This article proposes an algorithm of skillsets identification that allows us to extract skills that are needed by companies from different occupational groups in the information technologies sector. Using the unstructured online-vacancies database for the Russian regional labor market, skills are extracted and unified with the use of TF-IDF and n-grams approaches. As a result, key specific skillsets for various occupations are found. The proposed algorithm allows us to identify and standardize key skills which might be applicable to create a system of Russian classification for occupations and skills. In addition, the algorithm allows us to provide lists of the key combinations of skills that are in high demand among companies inside each particular occupation.

Software engineering is a continuously evolving sector and the demands of the related labor market result in a wide variety of job openings, ranging from developers to customer service positions. Thus, there is a need to continuously monitor labor market trends using data and analytics. Both employers and employees can benefit by capturing emerging trends which can facilitate continuous learning and training in new technologies, support of better matching between a job offer and the ideal candidate and expertise detection. To fulfill these needs, the results of labor market analytics need to reach the stakeholders timely and accurately. However, often delays occur, which stem from time-consuming approaches based on collecting data from traditional sources, such as questionnaires or interviews. Recently, researchers started leveraging content from digital sources, which are easily accessed and contain a wealth of information. This paper presents the results of a Systematic Mapping Study on digital sources that can be used to address the data analytics needs of the labor market. It provides a multifaceted categorization of the issues involved in the analysis of digital sources of the software engineering labor market. It aims to identify digital labor market sources for data retrieval which are appropriate for employers and employees analytics. Additionally, it aims to connect different skill types, needs and goals of labor market with the utilization of digital sources and data analysis methods. In total 86 primary studies were selected and each one was evaluated and classified aiming to identify the: (a) digital sources that are used for labor market analytics; (b) type of skills they examine; (c) methods which are used to utilize the raw digital content; (d) goals for which every primary study is conducted; (e) beneficiaries (stakeholder) of the results; and (f) time trends for all the above.
