Data Management Training for Graduate Students at a Large Research University

Abstract: This article describes UMass Amherst Libraries data management workshops and online resources developed for graduate students. Although students respond favorably to general "Data Management Basics" workshops, they offer suggestions for improvement and request discipline-specific examples, tools, and resources to augment the general information presented. In response, the Libraries' Data Working Group aims to develop both broad-based, discipline agnostic workshops as well as on-demand, discipline-specific work… Show more

“…Teaching research data management to graduate students is a trend within information literacy instruction (Carlson et al 2011;Qin and D'ignazio 2010;Whitmire 2015). A variety of pedagogies have been used, including one shot guest lectures (Westra and Walton 2015), online courses (Johnston and Jeffryes 2014b), traditional courses (Bracke and Fosmire 2015), workshops (Adamick, Reznik-Zellen, and Sheridan 2012), team-based active learning (Clement et al 2017), and blended learning (Zhang, Goodman, and Xie 2015).…”

“…However, it would be beneficial to examine these workshops further to understand their individual components and goals. In a study of University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries, graduate students expressed the desire for more discipline-specific information during workshops (Adamick et al 2012). Libraries who want to offer data management services to the student body must to evaluate the needs of the students, and then attempt to provide services to meet those needs.…”
