Data journals: incentivizing data access and documentation within the scholarly communication system

Abstract: Data journals provide strong incentives for data creators to verify, document and disseminate their data. They also bring data access and documentation into the mainstream of scholarly communication, rewarding data creators through existing mechanisms of peer-reviewed publication and citation tracking. These same advantages are not generally associated with data repositories, or with conventional journals' data-sharing mandates. This article describes the unique advantages of data journals. It also examines th… Show more

“…Data repositories hosted by CURE networks provide low‐barrier opportunities to archive and pool collected data among instructors, while generalized data repositories (eg Dryad, Figshare, Environmental Data Initiative) can be leveraged to connect and share data more broadly (Table 1). Journals specializing in the publication and description of datasets also offer a way to cite and credit dataset authors, combining open access with peer review and citation tracking (Walters 2020).…”

“…In this study, we analyzed data papers included in Scientific Data and Data in Brief , two domain‐independent flagship data journals. The two journals were selected because, first, they are the two leading exclusively data journals, based on journal impact factor, number of publications, and presence in empirical studies (Kim, 2020; Walters, 2020). For this reason, we believe these journals offer a representative sample of data publications.…”

“…Mayernik et al (2015) stress that "data peer review is not a monolithic concept", emphasizing the distinction between four scenarios for data peer review: "1) data analyzed in traditional scientific articles, 2) data articles published in traditional scientific journals, 3) data submitted to open access data repositories, and 4) datasets published via articles in data journals". Regarding peer review carried out by data journals, Walters (2020) concludes that "conventional peer review is still the norm", although a few journals "have adopted innovative procedures". Peer review of software is still in an early stage of development.…”
