Data integration for offshore decommissioning waste management

Abstract: Offshore decommissioning represents significant business opportunities for oil and gas service companies. However, for owners of offshore assets and regulators, it is a liability because of the associated costs. One way of mitigating decommissioning costs is through the sales and reuse of decommissioned items. To achieve this effectively, reliability assessment of decommissioned items is required. Such an assessment relies on data collected on the various items over the lifecycle of an engineering asset. Consi… Show more

“…This is further manifested in the lack of standards to support a semantic AEC industry. For instance, apart from ISO 15926 (Akinyemi et al, 2020), there were no ISO standards that support/mandate existing ontology deployment in the AEC industry, until the recent publication of ISO 23386 that promotes interconnected data dictionaries.…”

“…There exist some translational languages to convert data from relational format to RDF such as D2RQ (D2RQ 2020) and YARRRML (YARRRML 2020). As per Akinyemi et al (2020), when querying across multiple sources over the internet, as in this case, then federated SPARQL queries are to be used. For such on-the-fly querying, Akinyemi et al (2020) recommended using an Ontology-based Data Access (OBDA) approach.…”

“…It should also be mentioned that some preliminary lab-based results were presented by the authors in [9], [10] where some basic studies were reported such as the transmission of a digitized image for various propagation scenarios within circular pipelines. Expanding on these initial studies, we contribute further to the development of future digital-based oil fields which can foster real-time crude extraction monitoring as well as field decommissioning monitoring when required [11], [12], [13], [14].…”

“…As there are several viable options for decommissioning used platforms, a review of these options is needed. In recent years, several studies (Brigitte et al, 2018;Bull et al, 2019) have appeared in the academic literature on the topic of decommissioning offshore platforms (see Table 1) and related aspects such as decarbonisation, waste management (Akinyemi et al, 2020) and hydrogen production from renewable sources (Pflugmann and De Blasio, 2020). In addition, a new paradigm is also emerging, namely that of long-term coexistence between offshore platforms and marine habitats.…”
