Recent advancement in the digital technology and internet has facilitated usage of multimedia objects for data communication. However, interchanging information through the internet raises several security concerns and needs to be addressed. Image steganography has gained huge attention from researchers for data security. Image steganography secures the data by imperceptibly embedding data bits into image pixels with a lesser probability of detection. Additionally, the encryption of data before embedding provides double-layer protection from the potential eavesdropper. Several steganography and cryptographic approaches have been developed so far to ensure data safety during transmission over a network. The purpose of this work is to succinctly review recent progress in the area of information security utilizing combination of cryptography and steganography (crypto-stego) methods for ensuring double layer security for covert communication. The paper highlights the pros and cons of the existing image steganography techniques and crypto-stego methods. Further, a detailed description of commonly using evaluations parameters for both steganography and cryptography, are given in this paper. Overall, this work is an attempt to create a better understanding of image steganography and its coupling with the encryption methods for developing state of art double layer security crypto-stego systems.

Steganography is a technique to hide a secret message within a different multimedia carrier so that the secret message cannot be identified. The goals of steganography techniques include improvements in imperceptibility, information hiding, capacity, security, and robustness. In spite of numerous secure methodologies that have been introduced, there are ongoing attempts to develop these techniques to make them more secure and robust. This paper introduces a color image steganographic method based on a secret map, namely 3-D cat. The proposed method aims to embed data using a secure structure of chaotic steganography, ensuring better security. Rather than using the complete image for data hiding, the selection of the image band and pixel coordination is adopted, using the 3D map that produces irregular outputs for embedding a secret message randomly in the least significant bit (LSB) of the cover image. This increases the complexity encountered by the attackers. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated and the results reveal that the proposed method provides a high level of security through defeating various attacks, such as statistical attacks, with no detectable distortion in the stego-image. Comparison results ensure that the proposed method surpasses other existing steganographic methods regarding the Mean Square Error (MSE) and Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio(PSNR).

Blind steganalysis or the universal steganalysis helps to identify hidden information without previous knowledge of the content or the embedding technique. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) and SVM- Particle Swarm Optimization (SVM-PSO) classifiers are adopted for the proposed blind steganalysis. The important features of the JPEG images are extracted using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). The kernel functions used for the classifiers in the proposed work are the linear, epanechnikov, multi-quadratic, radial, ANOVA and polynomial. The proposed work uses linear, shuffle, stratified and automatic sampling techniques. The proposed work employs four techniques for image embedding namely, Least Significant Bit (LSB) Matching, LSB replacement, Pixel Value Differencing (PVD) and F5 and applies 25% embedding. The data to the classifier is split as 80:20 for training and testing and 10-fold cross validation is carried out.
