Data Freshness Aware Content-Centric Networking in WSNs

Abstract: The Content-Centric Networking (CCN) concept is a significant approach of several future Internet research activities. CCN in Wireless Sensor Networks present a promised technique that may ensure data routing based on content. In this paper, we focus on the lifetime of the Content Object exchanged in the network and we explain the idea of its integration in CCN for WSNs to better highlight the relevance of its exploitation. To this end, we implement DFCCN-WSNs 'Data Freshness aware Content-Centric Networking i… Show more

“…They also classified recent NDN-based transport control strategies. NDN has evolved as a suitable network stack solution for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) (Jaber et al, 2017), vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) (Khelifi et al, 2020), and the Internet of Things (IoT) (Al-Turjman, 2018). Due to the broadcast nature of the wireless channel, a MANET presents severe issues (e.g., packet collisions, flooding, and data redundancy).…”

“…The Directed Diffusion (DD) protocol [ 34 ] is a classical routing solution for sensor networks, while Van Jacobson et al [ 25 ], later, suggested the initial ideas that led to the design of the first information-centric routing protocol for WSNs. Recently, the search for alternative architectures for the Future Internet and the increasing number of IoT applications has once again drawn attention to information-centric approaches, and a number of works investigated the applicability and potential of the paradigm in WSNs [ 13 , 16 , 17 , 21 , 22 , 26 , 27 , 37 ].…”

“…ICN represents a revolutionary approach in the network field [ 15 , 16 ]. The basic idea is to enable data routing based on the information provided by nodes (content), rather than based on the address of the nodes.…”

“…Then the other nodes may subscribe to the data by registering an interest. Furthermore we can find CCN which offers in-network caching that contribute in alleviating the pressure on the network bandwidth in WSNs while spreading content copies between the network nodes in a distributed and efficient manner [2,3,4]. Caching is the essential feature of content-centric networking which has been used for many enhancement like fault-tolerance, improving communication over WSNs, multicasting applications, and improving the network performance [5].…”
