“…The original tailings solutions within the tailings piles and evaporation ponds were acid solutions (pH less than 4) composed predominantly of aluminum sulfate and sodium chloride (Markos and Bush, 1982). Previous geochemical studies demonstrated that as the solutions migrated into the unconfined aquifer, they were immediately neutralized at the tailings-soil interface by the reaction of calcite and dolomite with the acid solution.…”
