Data-Driven Sonification of CFD Aneurysm Models

Abstract: A novel method is presented for inspecting and characterizing turbulent-like hemodynamic structures in intracranial cerebral aneurysms by sonification of data generated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The intention of the current research is to intuitively communicate flow complexity by augmenting conventional flow visualizations with data-driven sound, thereby increasing the ease of interpretation of dense spatiotemporal data through multimodal presentation. The described implementation allows the u… Show more

“…These were then recreated as sound using narrowly band-passed noise for each frequency bin of the spectrogram, controlling the loudness of each band with the amplitude of the corresponding frequency bin through time. 18 The sonification was generated objectively, blinded to the patient's self-reported description of her PT.…”

“…It has been known for decades that representing multidimensional data with multiple acoustic dimensions introduces distortions [23,37,38]. However, many current attempts to sonify data still take this approach [39][40][41]. As an alternative, ecological parameter mapping techniques might provide a more effective approach.…”

“…We identified six medicine and health related topics in our database, out of which three are related to brain scans [GR11, RFM13,GRK*16], two are audiovisually displaying blow flow and aneurysm models [MNW*18,TMN*21], and one is concerned with Covid‐19 data [LSB*23].…”

“…The mapping overlap between the sonification and the visualization seems to help the user perceive an idiom as integrated rather than as two displays existing next to each other. There are different options to design a mixed mapping, out of which a promising one seems to be to synchronize a visual animation with a sonification [TMN*21, MNW*18]. In a similar manner, synchronizing the spatial position of the visual display with the direction that a user perceives the sound from can be helpful to perceptually integrate the two stimuli [CB17].…”
