Data-Driven Delivery of Implementation Supports in a Multi-Tiered Framework: A Pilot Study

Abstract: For multi-tiered systems of support, such as Response-to-Intervention and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, to effectively impact student outcomes, interventions delivered across the tiers must be implemented as planned (i.e., with adequate treatment integrity). However, research suggests that most school personnel struggle to deliver interventions with treatment integrity, which negatively impacts the potential effectiveness of these interventions. Numerous strategies to support treatment integrit… Show more

“…When educators struggle to deliver classroom‐based interventions, ongoing implementation support may be useful (Sanetti & Collier‐Meek, ). Implementation support can include a variety of activities ranging from requesting that an educator self‐monitor his/her own implementation (Simonsen, MacSuga, Fallon, & Sugai, ), to providing an educator with comprehensive performance feedback related to implementation (Sanetti et al., ).…”

“…Implementation support can range from low (e.g., self‐monitoring) to high (e.g., performance feedback) levels of intensity. Researchers propose providing more intensive strategies to educators once less‐intensive strategies have proven ineffective (Sanetti & Collier‐Meek, ). Ultimately, implementation support is intended to bolster educators’ intervention delivery to support students’ learning and behavior in the classroom.…”

“…Outlining the current behavior, alternative behavior, and desired behavior in a competing pathway model allows for the systematic identification of intervention strategies (O'Neill et al., ). In this case, research‐supported implementation support strategies (Sanetti & Collier‐Meek, ) can be considered based on (a) how they might change the environment relative to antecedents; and (b) what consequence strategy is most likely to affect change given the function of the teacher's current behavior.…”

“…Comprehensive training is a critical step to engaging in a new skill. Although some training may have already occurred when the intervention was initially introduced, research suggests that one‐time training is not sufficient for an implementer to learn a new skill and additional, comprehensive direct training is usually needed (Sanetti & Collier‐Meek, ; Sterling‐Turner et al., ). Strategies to teach new behaviors can be implemented in phases to first teach the alternative behavior before teaching the desired behavior (see Table ).…”
