AbstractThe increasing population growth and urbanization rises the worldwide consumption of material resources and energy demand. The challenges of the future will be to provide sufficient resources and to minimize the continual amount of waste and energy demand. For the achievement of sustainability, increasing recycling rates and reuse of materials, next to the reduction of energy consumption has the highest priority.This article presents the results of the multidisciplinary research project SCI_BIM, which is conducted on an occupied existing building. Within SCI_BIM, a workflow for coupling digital technologies for scanning and modeling of buildings is developed. Laser scanning is used for capturing the geometry, and ground-penetrating radar is used for assessing material composition. For the semi-automated generation of an as-built BIM, algorithms are developed, wherefore the Point-Cloud serves as a basis. The BIM-model is used for energy modeling and analysis as well as for the automated compilation of Material Passports. Further, a gamification concept will be developed to motivate the buildings’ users to collect data. By applying the gamification concept, the reduction of energy consumption together with an automated update of the as-built BIM will be tested. This article aims to analyze the complex interdisciplinary interactions, data, and model exchange processes of various disciplines collaborating within SCI_BIM.Results show that the developed methodology is confronted with many challenges. Nevertheless, it has the potential to serve as a basis for the creation of secondary raw materials cadaster and for the optimization of energy consumption in existing buildings.

The construction sector has a large negative impact on the environment due to its wasteful treatment of raw materials. To minimize the raw materials consumption, increasing recycling rates through reusing or recycling materials in existing stocks is of utmost importance. However, the main obstacle in the recycling of existing building stocks is the lack of information about materials incorporated in buildings. This work presents the ongoing research within the multidisciplinary research project SCI_BIM, which received funding by the Austrian federal ministry of transport, innovation and technology. Within this paper, the semi-automated generation of an as-built BIM-Model for an existing building as well as the generation of a Material Passport (MP) is tested. In order to obtain the geometry and material information, laser scanners (geometry) and a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR, for materials) are used. Thereby, first, a semi-automated BIM-Model is generated from the point cloud, which was obtained from the laser scans. Finally, the material information obtained from the GPR is integrated into the BIM-Model for the compilation of the MP. First results show that the generation of the MP for the use case is possible, but confronted with manual steps, such as integrating material information from different sources (e.g. analysis of demolition experts). The results of this paper should serve as a basis for the creation of a secondary raw materials cadastre in order to enable recycling of valuable materials, thus supporting the achievement of the EU goals 20-20-20.

The construction industry consumes an enormous amount of global resources and produces more waste than any other sector. The need to move toward sustainable development in construction requires significant changes in construction and demolition (C&D) waste management. The estimation of waste, recycling materials and reusable components could be vital in waste management, achieving huge efficiency in the construction industry. Moreover, a typical building comprises of an extensive amount of materials and components with various characteristics. This study proposes a Building Information Modelling (BIM)-based system to allow the circular economy by storing information of the materials and components of buildings and by effectively managing the recycling of materials and reuse of components. A tool which serves as a Material and Component (M&C) bank was developed with PHP and MYSQL by making use of a web browser able to extract the materials and component information of a building through the BIM model. This information is vital for several uses such as quantification of C&D waste and assessing for the design for deconstruction. It can also be used to obtain the information of the reusable condition of the components and instructions for the reconstruction.Sustainability 2020, 12, 1766 2 of 15 considered at the design phase. If designed properly, the whole building or each component of the building may be usable for similar applications at the end of a first service life. Design for Deconstruction (DfD) is closely linked with the research on reducing, reuse, and recycling of building materials. DfD is defined as the design of structures to facilitate future change, revitalization, and removal for recovery of components and materials for reuse. Thus, DfD will increase the useful life of components of a structure by making them available as material stocks for the future. However, failure to identify components in advance and the condition of the components after disassembling, as well as the certification of the remaining performance of the components, are main barriers to implement this process. Thus, it is necessary to keep the records of all information related to the design, materials, and construction of the structure as well as of the ageing process and possible incidents which may occur during the life span of a building.The second category of research includes developing tools for C&D waste management [16,17]. Poon et al. [18] introduced a method called 'Waste Index' to estimate the waste generation from demolition. It was defined as the quantity of construction waste generated per Gross Floor Area (GFA). Jalali [19] introduced the 'Component Index' to estimate the amount of waste based on the type of components in a building.
