Data Analysis: Strengthening Inferences in Quantitative Education Studies Conducted by Novice Researchers

Abstract: Data analysis is a significant methodological component when conducting quantitative education studies. Guidelines for conducting data analyses in quantitative education studies are common but often underemphasize four important methodological components impacting the validity of inferences: quality of constructed measures, proper handling of missing data, proper level of measurement of a dependent variable, and model checking. This paper highlights these components for novice researchers to help ensure statis… Show more

“…Finally, we fitted the final selected model on the full data to obtain the regression coefficients and the amount of variance explained. Relatedly, we checked model assumptions to ensure the statistical conclusion validity and therefore the generalizability of study-based inferences (Abulela & Harwell, 2020).…”

“…They also had diverse socioeconomic status (e.g., low, medium, and high), given the diversity of population surveyed. Though the sample was convenient, we proportionally represented gender subgroups to increase similarity of students' demographics between the sample and population of interest as recommended in methodological research (e.g., Abulela & Harwell, 2019), which increases the likelihood of results generalizability. All participants completed an adapted Arabic version of the LASSI-II (Abdelsamea & Bart, 2019) and the emotional engagement subscale adapted from the student engagement scale (Abulela, 2015).…”

“…Data analysis is a significant methodological component while conducting empirical study. The literature documented that guidelines for conducting data analyses in quantitative studies are common, but often underemphasize on proper handling of missing data, proper level of measurement of variables and model checking to ensure statistical inferences are valid (Abulela & Harwell, 2020 ). In this regard, variables of the study were measured properly by referring empirical studies from the existing literature of small business financing and the collected data were screened and treated for errors and missing values.…”

“…Though Indonesia has a large education system and the government itself is providing funds for public education institutions which are operating in all regions of the world, the performance of all the public educational institutions is not satisfactory (Alvi & Gillies, 2021;Asha & Makalela, 2020;Chilimba, Dunga, & Mafini, 2020;Dinsmore, 2017). Students' self-regulated learning has become an essential part of student's success or accomplishments in the education sector and therefore, needs the attention of policymakers and academics (Abulela & Harwell, 2020;Barr & Askell-Williams, 2020;Dong, Wu, Dong, & Tang, 2020;Thomas, Muls, Backer, & Lombaerts, 2021). Thus, the current study investigates into the role of different learning styles such as just-in-time learning, case-based learning, inquiry learning, project-based learning and problem-based learning vis-à-vis students' selfregulated learning in public sector universities in Indonesia.…”
