Data analysis pipeline for EChO end-to-end simulations

Abstract: Atmospheric spectroscopy of extrasolar planets is an intricate business. Atmospheric signatures typically require a photometric precision of 1 × 10 −4 in flux over several hours. Such precision demands high instrument stability as well as an understanding of stellar variability and an optimal data reduction and removal of systematic noise. In the context of the EChO mission concept, we here discuss the data reduction and analysis pipeline developed for the EChO end-to-end simulator EChOSim. We present and disc… Show more

“…EChOSim does not provide data reduction software to reconstruct the planet and star spectra, and their uncertainties from the simulated timelines. A reduction pipeline to reconstruct the spectra from EChOSim simulations has been developed for the EChO assessment study [10] and was used by [11] to compare the retrieved atmospheric properties (temperature structure, composition and cloud properties) with the known input values.…”

“…This allows the validation of the reduction pipeline in reconstructing the signal in the presence of correlated and uncorrelated noise sources, and systematics. A data reduction pipeline has been developed to analyse EChOSim simulations in the context of the EChO mission study [10]. Case studies discussed in the last paragraph of this section have been analysed using this reduction software.…”

“…The degeneracy of solutions embedded in the current transit observations [95,100,105,159,161,187] inhibits any serious attempt to estimate the elemental abundances. New and better quality data are needed for this purpose.…”

“…The frequency band over which the requirement applies is between 2.8×10 −5 Hz and 3.7 mHz, or~5 min to 10 h [60,122,127,187]. This implies having the capability to remove any residual systematics and to co-add the elementary observations from many repeat visits to a given target.…”
