The need to tunnel closely beneath piles is increasing due to the development of urban areas. This poses a risk to the stability and serviceability of overlying structures (e.g. buildings, piers, piled embankments). The impact of tunneling on piles is usually assessed using a displacement threshold, yet this provides no information about the post-tunneling pile safety factor. Knowledge of a pile's safety factor under serviceability or extreme loading conditions is important, especially if future re-purposing of the associated superstructure is a possibility. Tunneling can reduce the safety factor of a pile up to the point of geotechnical failure (i.e. when the pile capacity reduces to that of the applied load), yet little guidance is available to enable a straightforward means of assessing the post-tunneling safety factor of a pile. This paper aims to address this shortcoming by providing design charts based on an analytical tunnel-single pile interaction approach that provides a means of determining post-tunneling pile safety factor. The methodology and design charts are applicable to drained soil conditions and include for the effects of initial pile safety factor, pile installation method (displacement (driven and jacked), non-displacement (bored) with only shaft capacity, and 1 Marshall et al. non-displacement with base and shaft capacity), and varying water table depth. In the paper, as a validation exercise, analytical predictions are compared against data from geotechnical centrifuge tests designed to model both displacement and non-displacement piles in sands, including a variety of tunnel-pile relative locations and initial pile safety factors. For a specified design value of post-tunneling pile safety factor, the design charts enable a quick assessment of the safe location of a pile or tolerable tunnel volume loss considering ground parameters, water table position, pile installation method, and initial safety factor.

In recent years, with rapid urbanization and construction of underground pipeline facilities for the transmission of electricity, supply of water, sewage disposal or provision of facilities like telephone lines, gas pipe lines, etc., it is highly probable to encounter an existing pipeline system in the vicinity of a proposed foundation of a structure. Hence, design and construction of new foundation structure near the existing subsurface pipeline system is imperative and should be addressed for keeping either a minimum safe clearance between tunnel/buried pipe and pile without compromising the capacity of pile or estimating the reduced capacity due to existing nearby pipeline or tunnel, which is an important aspect in the analysis and design of pile foundation. Present study demonstrates a model and numerical study of the behaviour of a single pile in the vicinity of existing tunnel/buried pipe in a cohesionless soil. During experimental work, a small scale pile model was tested for its load-settlement behaviour without and with the existence of buried PVC pipe modelled as a tunnel in the vicinity near the shaft. The complete experimental setup consisted of a steel box filled with sand at two different relative density values and vertical concentric load was applied on the model pile through a hydraulic jack and reaction frame arrangement connected with a proving ring. Results of pile loading test have been provided, which demonstrate the tunnel-pile interaction problem effect on the pile capacity, and it was also numerically verified using commercially available finite-element tool. With due verification, parametric study is performed, through finite-element analysis, by varying the range of input parameters such as unit weight, internal friction angle, diameter of pile and elastic modulus of pile material to the soil modulus ratio. Based on the results of numerical analysis in terms of load-settlement curves, it is noted that there is 15-20% reduction in the pile capacity of a single pile to be installed in cohesionless soil in the vicinity of the existing buried pipe or tunnel, which depends on the geometries of the pile and tunnel construction, properties of the in situ soil and zones of influence due to relative stiffness of soil and pipe materials.

Tunneling beneath piled structures may compromise the stability and serviceability of the structure. The assessment of potential structure damage is a problem being faced by engineers across the globe. This paper presents the outcomes of a series of geotechnical centrifuge experiments designed to simulate the effect of excavating a tunnel beneath piled structures. The stiffness and weight effects of piled structures are examined independently using aluminum plates of varying stiffness (equivalent beam approach) and the addition of weights supported by aluminum piles. Greenfield displacement patterns and results from pile loading tests are also provided. The variation of structure displacement profiles with plate stiffness, weight, and tunnel volume loss are used to illustrate the main effects of tunnel-pile interaction and the contribution of the superstructure to the global tunnel-pile-structure interaction. Results indicate that piles have a detrimental role in tunnel-structure interaction problems, whereas the superstructure stiffness and weight can, respectively, reduce and increase structure distortions and settlements. Finally, the potential for structural damage is evaluated by comparing structure and greenfield deflection ratios as well as resulting modification factors. The paper presents a unique set of results and insights that provide valuable guidance to engineers working across the ground and structural engineering disciplines.
