Learning analytics (LA) dashboards are becoming increasingly available in various learning settings. However, teachers may face challenges in understanding and interpreting the data visualisations presented on those dashboards. In response to this, some LA researchers are incorporating visual cueing techniques, like data storytelling (DS), into LA dashboard design to reduce the data visualisation skills – often referred to as visualisation literacy (VL) – and cognitive effort required by teachers to effectively use dashboards. However, despite the potential of DS principles in simplifying data visualisations, there is limited evidence supporting their effectiveness in actually reducing teachers’ cognitive load. The study presented in this paper addresses this gap by investigating the potential impact of LA dashboards, with and without DS elements, on teachers with varying VL levels. Through a quasi-experimental study involving 23 teachers, we analysed changes in pupil dilation – a proxy for cognitive load – as they examined LA dashboards featuring student data captured while participating in synchronous, online collaborative learning tasks. Our findings suggest DS can reduce cognitive load, particularly for teachers with lower VL. These results provide insight into the effects of DS and VL on teachers’ cognitive load, thereby informing the design of LA dashboards. Implications for practice or policy:• Developers of LA dashboards need to pay more attention to incorporating visual and narrative elements that are easily comprehensible and target-oriented, based on users’ visualisation literacy levels.• Educational providers and LA designers can recommend dashboards with DS elements to teachers with low VL to enhance their work efficiency.

Interactive process mining of cancer treatment sequences with melanoma real-world data

The growing availability of clinical real-world data (RWD) represents a formidable opportunity to complement evidence from randomized clinical trials and observe how oncological treatments perform in real-life conditions. In particular, RWD can provide insights on questions for which no clinical trials exist, such as comparing outcomes from different sequences of treatments. To this end, process mining is a particularly suitable methodology for analyzing different treatment paths and their associated outcomes. Here, we describe an implementation of process mining algorithms directly within our hospital information system with an interactive application that allows oncologists to compare sequences of treatments in terms of overall survival, progression-free survival and best overall response. As an application example, we first performed a RWD descriptive analysis of 303 patients with advanced melanoma and reproduced findings observed in two notorious clinical trials: CheckMate-067 and DREAMseq. Then, we explored the outcomes of an immune-checkpoint inhibitor rechallenge after a first progression on immunotherapy versus switching to a BRAF targeted treatment. By using interactive process-oriented RWD analysis, we observed that patients still derive long-term survival benefits from immune-checkpoint inhibitors rechallenge, which could have direct implications on treatment guidelines for patients able to carry on immune-checkpoint therapy, if confirmed by external RWD and randomized clinical trials. Overall, our results highlight how an interactive implementation of process mining can lead to clinically relevant insights from RWD with a framework that can be ported to other centers or networks of centers.

The Democratizing Data Initiative looks to demonstrate the impact of the data assets produced by U.S. federal agencies. In this article we outline the process flows and cyberinfrastructure that support the achievement of that objective. We describe how the focus on data assets evolved from the initial search for data sets to the challenges of finding how the data assets have been used by the research community. In this regard, we explain both why we need to define a search corpus of full-text records and the process by which that search corpus is created. We then explain the process of applying machine learning (Kaggle) algorithms to that full-text search corpus and the further steps we take to refine the outputs generated by those algorithms, including the manual validation by subject matter experts that we employ to minimize false positive data set identification in the final outputs. Once validation is complete, we explain how the outputs are made available to diverse stakeholders-agency staff, funding partners, general public-through a variety of channels including REST APIs, dashboards, SciServer, Jupyter Notebooks, and direct database access. We conclude by looking at potential future enhancements to the process and possible research directions.
