“…Experimental studies have shown the measurable effects on lichens of sulphur dioxide at different concentrations (Pearson and Skye, 1965;Showman, 1972;Puckett et ah, 1973;Turk et al, 1974), at different levels of humidity (Rao and LeBlanc, 1966;Margot, 1973) and conditions of pH (Hill, 1971;Baddeley et al, 1971Baddeley et al, , 1972Baddeley et al, , 1973 and other laboratory investigations have indicated the relative sulphur dioxide sensitivity of a wide range of species (Dassler and Ranft, 1969;Bortitz and Ranft, 1972;Ranft and Dassler, 1972). The possible relevance of air speed and airborne pollutants on lichen growth and distribution has already been referred to in the field (Coppins, 1973:126); but there is a need to substantiate field observation with experimental studies.…”
