Abstract. Eine Übersicht der aktuellen stratigraphischen Bezeichnungen für die quartäre Schichtenfolge Südbayerns wird gegeben, wie sie am Geologischen Dienst des Bayerischen Landesamts für Umwelt in Verwendung ist. Unterschiedliche stratigraphische Gliederungsansätze für kontinentale Quartärablagerungen werden vorgestellt und die klimatostratigraphische Einteilung sowie die Terrassenstratigraphie als in Bayern meistverwendete Varianten näher ausgeführt. Die Beschreibung der zugehörigen, bisher informellen Einheiten bezweckt eine Dokumentation des jeweiligen Stands der Verwendung und kann womöglich formelle Definitionen vorbereiten. Die klimatostratigraphischen Einheiten sollen den gesamten Zeitraum des Quartärs lückenlos abdecken und vertreten derzeit Überregionale, formelle Stufenbezeichnungen. In Bayern wird weiterhin die klassische Gliederung nach Penck & Brückner (1901–1909) mit ihren Erweiterungen verwendet. Neue Erkenntnisse über eine stärkere Gliederung des Eiszeitalters durch untergeordnete Kalt- und Warmphasen werden in dieses System integriert. Für diese Gliederung des Quartärs in Südbayern ausschlaggebend sind zum Einen die Terrassentreppen, deren zeitliche Interpretation eine Grundlage der sogenannten Morphostratigraphie bildet. Die zweite Grundlage bilden Endmoränengirlanden, die mit den davon ausgehenden Terrassen glazial-glazifluviale Sequenzen (‚Glaziale Serien’) bilden. Neben der ausführlichen Dokumentation der Terrassen-Einheiten, werden deshalb auch verschiedene Endmoränen-Gliederungen vorgestellt. Weitere Nomenklaturen, die auf anderen Kriterien beruhen oder zu anderen chronologischen Einstufungen gelangen, sind für Bayern oder in den angrenzenden Ländern in Gebrauch. Auch die beschriebenen stratigraphischen Gliederungen werden nicht von allen Bearbeitern in gleicher Weise verwendet. Die Dokumentation der derzeitigen Verwendung soll eine Abstimmung dieser Nomenklaturen im Interesse der Nutzer fördern.

August): Response of the Rhine-Meuse fluvial system to Saalian ice-sheet dynamics.A new reconstruction of the interaction between the Saalian Drente glaciation ice margin and the Rhine-Meuse fluvial system is presented based on a sedimentary analysis of continuous core material, archived data and a section in an ice-pushed ridge. Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) was applied to obtain independent age control on these sediments and to establish a first absolute chronology for palaeogeographical events prior to and during the glaciation. We identified several Rhine and Meuse river courses that were active before the Drente glaciation (MIS 11-7). The Drente glaciation ice advance into The Netherlands (OSL-dated to fall within MIS 6) led to major re-arrangement of this drainage network. The invading ice sheet overrode existing fluvial morphology and forced the Rhine-Meuse system into a proglacial position. During deglaciation, the Rhine shifted into a basin in the formerly glaciated area, while the Meuse remained south of the former ice limit, a configuration that persisted throughout most of the Eemian and Weichselian periods. An enigmatic high position of proglacial fluvial units and their subsequent dissection during deglaciation by the Meuse may partially be explained by glacio-isostatic rebound of the area, but primarily reflects a phase of high base level related to a temporary proglacial lake in the southern North Sea area, with lake levels approximating modern sea levels. Our reconstruction indicates that full 'opening' of the Dover Strait and lowering of the Southern Bight, enabling interglacial marine exchange between the English Channel and the North Sea, is to be attributed to events during the end of MIS 6.

Investigation of a group of landforms and their underlying deposits on the eastern margin of the Fenland in East Anglia has demonstrated that they represent a series of glaciofluvial delta-fan and related sediments. Section logging, borehole records and previous descriptions combine to indicate that the sediments were deposited in icemarginal deltaic settings in an ice-marginal lake. The internal structure and form of the fan-like deltas has been demonstrated using extensive ground-penetrating radar investigation. The lake formed by the ice damming westward-aligned river valleys. Together, this evidence confirms historical descriptions of a glaciation of the Fenland, and clarifies the interpretation of gravels of the eastern Fenland margin. Recent reinterpretations of the latter as of fluvial rather than glacial meltwater origin are shown to be incorrect. It is concluded, on the basis of regional correlation, supported by optically stimulated luminescence dating, that the glaciation occurred at c. 160 kyr, i.e. in the Wolstonian (= Saalian) Stage (broadly equivalent to MIS ?11b-6). Comparison with The Netherlands' sequence shows a similarity of glacial marginal morphology, and the dates confirm the time equivalence with that during the late Saalian Drenthe Substage, Amersfoort ice-pushed ridge complex. The implications include that the c. 200 kyr interval, between the Hoxnian (Holsteinian) temperate Stage and the Wolstonian glaciation, was a period during which fluvial and periglacial activity modified the landscape under cold climates, with organic sediments laid down during warmer events. Palaeolithic humans were periodically present during this interval, their artefacts having been reworked by the subsequent glaciation.
